Local roundup: Williamsport boys basketball erases five-point deficit to defeat Lancaster McCaskey

Williamsport showed a lot of resilience in its season opener Saturday, dominating the fourth quarter, erasing a five-point deficit and beating Lancaster McCaskey, 57-44, on the road in boys basketball. James Evans-McQuay scored a career-high 26 points and Williamsport outscored McCaskey 25-7 in the fourth quarter. Evans-McQuay scored 12 points in the fourth quarter and Williamsport made 9 of 12 fourth-quarter free throws. Kenon Brown added 12 points for the Millionaires who host Loyalsock Tuesday night.

Loyalsock built momentum for Tuesday’s game with an impressive 78-71 win over Tyrone. The Lancers drained 12 3-pointers in a game which featured 23. Idris Ali scored 28 points and dealt five assists while Dom Jennings scored 17 points and drilled five 3-pointers. The Lancers (4-0) erased a second-quarter deficit with a 31-point second quarter and Saraj Ali recorded his fourth straight double-double, going for 16 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

Connor Sassano and Ross Eyer each recorded double-doubles as Muncy completed a four-game week in impressive fashion, routing CMVT, 73-38. Sassano scored 11 points and dealt 10 assists while Eyer scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Max Rymsza nearly reached a double-double as well with 12 points and eight rebounds. Giovanni Persun had 10 points and six rebounds as Muncy improved to 3-0 in the Mid-Penn.

Montgomery kept rolling, winning its third game in four nights as it defeated Benton, 56-34. The Red Raiders (3-2) built a 19-0 first-quarter lead and both Logan Almeida and Maurice Walters scored 18 points. Almeida added five steals and four assists with Walters grabbing six rebounds. Coltin Hans added seven rebounds and Gavin Moore scored eight points. The Raiders scored 50 points in the first three quarters.

Evan Laudenslager recorded a double-double and Secoy Roberts produced his fourth straight 20-point game as South Williamsport routed Northwest, 52-29 and won its second straight game. Laudenslager scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Roberts scored 20 points, grabbed five rebounds and added three assists. Trent Hampton scored 10 points and South allowed just 19 points in the first three quarters.

Carter Cowburn scored 14 points and Dylan Bieber and Josh Heiney combind for 17 in Hughesville’s 65-54 loss at Mount Carmel. The Spartans hung in all night against the undefeated Tornadoes and scored 20 fourth-quarter points.

Peyton Mussina scored 19 points and Dillon Young 16, but Montoursville could not hold onto a nine-point fourth-quarter lead as undefeated Mifflinburg rallied from a 68-63 double overtime win against the defending District 4 Class AAAA champions. Landon Reeder reached double figures for a fourth straight game, scoring 14 points and Montoursville was 17 of 20 at the foul line. Isaiah Valentine scored 28 for Mifflinburg (6-0).

Jake Hernandez scored 11 points, reaching double figures for a fifth time this season, but Danville defeated Lewisburg, 61-25.

North Penn-Liberty outscored Cowanesque Valley, 23-9, in the second quarter en route to a 70-38 win. Noah Spencer scored 24 points, Derek Litzelman added 15 and Koleton Roupp scored 11. Liberty drained eight 3-pointers in the win.

Gage Tilton led CV with 10 points and Ben Cooper scored nine.

Warrior Run defeated Midd-West, 69-50. Ethan Hartman had a solid day, scoring a remarkable 32 points to help lift the Defenders. Alex HAzzoum added 15 and Gabe Hogan scored 13.

In girls basketball, Bailey Monks and Emma Coolidge combined for 19 rebounds and Wellsboro played outstanding defense in a 28-22 loss against defending NTL champion Athens. Coolidge scored seven points and added three steals while Rylie Boyce pulled down eight rebounds in a game that was tied after three quarters.

North Penn-Liberty fell behind by 18 points in the first quarter and couldn’t claw back as the Mounties lost to Towanda, 59-26. Eva Rice and Jaclyn Nelson each scored eight points for Liberty. Towanda’s Paige Manchester scored 19.

Troy narrowly defeated Williamson, 27-22. Troy held a four-point lead going into the third quarter. Taylor Rae Jones led Williamson with a seven-point performance.

Canton defeated North Penn-Mansfield, 44-26. Emmie Tymeson scored 1 1 and Molly Ward added 10 for Canton. N.P.-Mansfield was led by Elizabeth Kahl’s nine.

Andrew Funk scored a season-high 18 points, sinking four 3-pointers, as Bucknell’s men’s basketball team secured its first victory of the season over Lehigh, 75-70, at Sojka Pavilion. Bucknell led the entire game and stretched their lead over the Mountain Hawks by as many as 15 in the second half.

John Meeks scored 12 for the Bison and Miles Latimer and Xander Rice both chipped in 10 points.

Line Mountain beat Hughesville, 61-6, in high school wrestling. Hughesville’s Reese Moon lost to Line Mountain’s Ian Coller by fall in 18 seconds.

The State College girls swimming team defeated Williamsport, 126-57, and the boys won, 134-48. On the girls side, Adelia Engle earned a victory for the Millionaires in the 1-meter diving competition (167.50). Mallory Pardoe won the 100 fly with a time of 1:00.90, winning by three seconds.

Williamsport’s Jack Beattie was the Millionaires’ lone winner, earning a victory in the 1-meter diving competition (253.95).

Loyalsock grad Hailey Zurich placed second in the women’s pole vault for Penn State, clearing 12 feet, 10 inches as the Nittany Lions opened the 2021 indoor season hosting at the Horace Ashenfelder Indoor Track. It’s a new collegiate best for Zurich.

South Williamsport grad Katie Jones did not compete in the event.
