Local roundup: Williamsport wrestling wins final 3 bouts to defeat 13th-ranked Cumberland Valley

The Williamsport wrestling team got its season started with a bang Saturday as the 25th-ranked Millionaires won the final three bouts to defeat 13th-ranked Cumberland Valley, 31-23. The Millionaires’ second match against Delaware Valley was canceled due to COVID concerns with Delaware Valley.

Williamsport trailed Cumberland Valley, 23-16, heading into the final three bouts but got wins from its three returning state qualifiers to pull out the win. Carter Weaver posted a 9-3 win at 132 pounds. Wrestling his first high school match in 673 days, Braden Bower picked up a fall in 55 seconds at 138. And Riley Bower secured the win with a fall in 47 seconds at 145. Charlie Lundy also picked up a crucial fall for the Millionaires at 215 pounds.

Muncy opened the season with a 51-15 loss to Hempfield. Scott Johnson (132), Bryce Vollman (138), Ty Nixon (160) and Ethan Gush (189) picked up the lone wins for the Indians, with Vollman, Nixon and Gush earning bonus points.

Milton won six of the nine contested bouts as it posted a season-opening 41-15 win over Bloomsburg. Returning state qualifier Kyler Crawford needed just 28 seconds for a fall at 145 pounds, and Chase Hoffman followed with a 29-second fall at 152 for the Black Panthers.

Caleb Burkhart had a 2-0 day for Hughesville as the Spartans split a pair of duals at a tri-meet with Danville and Meadowbrook Christian. The 20th-ranked Burkhart picked up an impressive 5-1 win over 22nd-ranked Gunner Treibley of Meadowbrook as Hughesville topped the Lions, 45-10. Burkhart added a fall at 285 in a 40-30 loss to Danville. Meadowbrook’s Cade Wirnsberger posted an 8-0 major decision over Hughesville regional qualifier Caiden Puderbach at 132 pounds.

Sheiana Tutler led a balanced St. John Neumann offense as the Knights led from start to finish and defeated Montgomery, 50-30 in its opening game Saturday afternoon. Tutler scored 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds, blocked seven shots and made seven steals. Faith and Lily Reid combined for 18 points, freshman Gigi Parlante had seven points and four steals and Zuzu Shanaway added eight rebounds. Faith Persing made seven steals and Taylor McRae pulled down nine rebounds for Montgomery.

Three players scored in double figures as Muncy opened its season with a 39-29 win at Meadowbrook Christian. Sophomore Mia Edkin led the way, scoring a career-high 12 points. Bell Hitesman (11) and Avery Bigelow (10) also reached double figures as Muncy lead from nearly start to finish.

Sophie Kilbride scored 16 points, grabbed five rebounds and dealt four assists as Lewisburg opened its season with a 52-29 win over Midd-West. Roz Noone added eight points, four rebounds and three assists. Lewisburg’s defense allowed just 14 points over the first three quarters. Former Muncy guard Bella Fave scored 11 points for Midd-West.

Playing with six freshmen, Williamsport hung tough with perennial District 2 title contender Holy Redeemer, dropping its opener on the road, 53-37. Sarina Beiter played a strong game for Williamsport and scored a career-high 15 points.

Leah Walter scored 18 points and Milton outscored Montoursville by 11 in the fourth quarter as it pulled away on the road and defeated the Warriors, 43-31. Maddie Adams scored 18 points for the Warriors who trailed by one after three quarters.

Devon Walker, Jocelyn McCracken and Aubrey Schilling all scored six points, but Jersey Shore was not able to climb out of an early hole as Shamokin defeated it, 54-30.

Caydence Macik scored 23 points and Kayleigh Miller added 20 as Athens defeated Cowanesque Valley, 69-14. Abby Ackley led CV with seven points.

In boys basketball, Loyalsock avenged its lone defeat from last year as Saraj Ali recorded his second consecutive double-double in an impressive 69-50 win at Danville. Ali scored 25 points and grabbed 22 rebounds as Loyalsock rallied from a second-quarter deficit. Ali reached a career-high in points as did guard Dom Jennings who scored 21 points for the Lancers (2-0). Loyalsock went 28-1 last year with its lone loss coming in the HAC championship against Danville which has three starters back from last year’s District 4 Class AAAA finalist.

Williamsport defeated Hazleton, 114-60, in girls swimming. Mallory Pardoe picked up two individual wins in the 500 free (5:50.66) and 100 fly (1:01.671) and helped both the 200 medley relay team and 200 free relay teams win. Laila Robertson won in the 100 back and Sydney Kelley won in the 200 free.

In boys swimming, Hazleton defeated Williamsport, 116-60. Jack Beattie won the diving competition for Williampsort with a score of 237 and placed first in the 100 fly with a time of 58.09. Ross Flerlage took second in the 100 free (58.73).

Andrew Funk scored 15 points but he was the only Bucknell player to score in double figures as the Bison fell to Lafayette, 83-60, in men’s basketball. Xander Rice and Miles Latimer both scored nine and Andre Screen added eight points.

Lafayette had five players in double figures scoring in E.J. Stephens (18), Neal Quinn (13), Leo O’Boyle (13), Kyle Jenkins (12) and Justin Jaworski (11). Sean Good added a team-high 11 rebounds.

Bucknell trailed at the half, 46-25.

Bucknell’s solid start to the season continued with an 80-51 win against Lafayette on the road in women’s basketball to improve Bucknell to 3-0. Senior guard Abby Kapp led all scorers with a career-best seven 3-pointers on nine attempts to score a career-hihg 24 points. Senior forward Tessa Brugler had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
