Local roundup: Mackenzie Weaver strikes out 9 in Montoursville’s win over Hughesville

Mackenzie Weaver struck out nine and allowed just one hit as Montoursville blanked Hughesville in a rout, 11-0, in six innings in high school softball Tuesday.

Weaver came up big offensively, going 2 for 3 with a double, home run, four RBIs and scored a run. Kaitlyn Klotz also hit a home run for Montoursville and Alexis Hartland and Hanah Klotz each had two hits.

After being scoreless for two innings, Montoursville took a 2-0 lead after three innings and went ahead 6-0 after four.

Muncy blanked St. John Neumann, 15-0, in four innings as Nolah Moyer and Rory Oden combined on a one-hitter.

Sheina Tutler had the Knights’ only hit as she went 1 for 2. Muncy was led by Kaylyn Reitz, who went 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs. Lily Frederick was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Nolah Moyer went 1 for 3 with two RBIs.

The Indians (2-0) scored eight runs in the first inning.

Coudersport defeated Galeton, 19-12. Mikayla Schott had a triple and four runs scored and Olivia Rohrbaugh went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs. Chloe Fuller led Galeton with a 3 for 5 performance and two RBIs.

Coudersport trailed going into the bottom of the third inning, 8-1, but scored six runs to cut the deficit to 8-7 going into the fourth inning. That’s where Coudersport scored seven runs to take the lead for good. Galeton collected 11 hits.

Lewisburg fell to Central Columbia, 2-0. The Green Dragons’ offense was stifled as Mea Constentino threw a perfect game for the Blue Jays with 16 strikeouts.

Marissa Helmrich threw her second straight no-hitter and Mallory Rodarmel hit a walk-off grand slam as Loyalsock made a big early-season statement and defeated defending District 4 Class AAA champion Bloomsburg, 12-1 in five innings. Helmrich struck out 12, including the first nine batters she faced. Cassie Gee and Summer McNulty each had three hits and Rodarmel and Rylie French added two each as Loyalsock improved to 3-0, winning its third straight game via mercy rule.

• In high school baseball, Brandon Laubach, Connor Griffin and Owen Anderson combined on a three-hitter and Jersey Shore started strong in a 7-4 season-opening win at Danville.

That trio of pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts with Laubach earning the win and Anderson the save. Jersey Shore built a 6-1 third-inning lead and Laubach, Anderson and Karter Peacock all had two hits. Laubach doubled twice, Anderson tripled and those two combined for four RBIs.

Isaac Keane had three hits and three RBIs and also earned the win as Wellsboro battered Troy, 25-3 in five innings. Brock Hamblin added two hits and two RBIs as Wellsboro (1-1) scored 10 fifth-inning runs after scoring 15 in the first two.

Hunter Jackson drove in five runs and Kaide Drick and Ben Marino two each as Montgomery opened its season with a 19-3, three-inning win at Bucktail.

Noah Gearhart scored four times and Montgomery scored 11 runs in the second inning to break things open. Kevin Wetlauffer earned the win and combined with Colby Springman on a four-hitter. Springman added three runs scored.

• Montoursville kept its undefeated season going as the Warriors defeated Milton, 5-0, in boys tennis to improve to 7-0.

Andrew Stapp earned a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles against the Black Panthers’ Jamir Wilt. At No. 3 singles, Montoursville’s Tyler Gilbert played a tough match against Seth Yoder and won, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-5.

Jersey Shore earned its first win of the season as the Bulldogs defeated Danville, 4-1. Jackson Stemler defeated Luke Frizia, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. Eli Bower won at No. 2 singles for Jersey Shore, 7-6 (7-2), 6-0, and Robert Smith earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.

Loyalsock fell to Bloomsburg, 3-2. Jett Pulizzi earned a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles for the Lancers. Bloomsburg’s Andy Madara (No. 1) and Levi Fritz (No. 3) earned the other singles victories.

Jackson Ellis and Austin Schwarzer lost a tough No. 1 doubles match to Jake Crane and Nate Pegg, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.

Central Mountain rebounded after its first loss of the season to defeat Shikellamy, 5-0, and improve to 5-1.

David Lindsay and Ethan Hall won at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, 6-0, 6-0. Nate Brinker won at No. 3 singles for the Wildcats, 6-3, 6-1.

Muncy fell to Central Columbia, 4-1. The Indians’ lone victory came at No. 3 singles where Marshall Rothrock won, 6-3, 4-6, 10-4.

Ernie Coppes lost at No. 2 singles to the Blue Jays’ Brady Maddon, 6-2, 6-3, and Kaleb Meyer fell at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0 to Jordan Baker.

Williamsport defeated Mifflinburg, 5-0. Across all three singles matches, the Millionaires only gave up one game. At No. 1 doubles, Owen Kaar and Evan Beiter won the first set 6-4, and were down 0-3 in the second set before coming back to win, 6-4.

• In college softball, Warrior Run grad Madison Waltman struck out 10 to lift Lock Haven to a 4-3 win in game two of a doubleheader against Millersville. The Marauders won game one, 3-1.

Riley McClellan had a triple and home run while going 2 for 3 in the second game to help the Bald Eagles (4-12, 4-12 PSAC East).

• The Lock Haven University tennis team opened the season at Kutztown and fell, 7-0.

Playing No. 1 doubles, Montoursville grad Maddy Reeves and Central Mountain grad Natalie Brown fell to Kutztown’s Claudia Makarski and Catherine Maher 3-6 in a hard fought match.

Montgomery grad Saige Whipple lost at No. 4 singles to Jess Marks, 6-0, 6-1.

• In girls track and field, Loyalsock fell to Southern Columbia, 100-45. Loyalsock’s Natayah Abdul-Hakim won the 100 hurdles in 18:38 and teammate Bella Mileto finished second in 19.42. The Lancers’ Alexis Keefer won the javelin competition with a throw of 111 feet, 7 inches.

Williamson’s Charly Slusser opened her season with a big jump, clearing 5 feet, 4 inches in the high jump as the Warriors beat Canton, 79-58, in girls track and field. The returning state qualifier also won the long jump and the 100 for Williamson.

Lewisburg won 18 of the 18 events to post a 129-21 victory over Danville. Returning state placewinner Elena Malone won both the 200 and 400 for the Green Dragons, and Amelia Kiepke swept the long, triple and high jumps. Siena Brazier added a pair of wins for the Green Dragons in the 100 and 300 hurdles, and Sarah Mahoney took first in the 1,600 and 3,200.

• Loyalsock’s Ian Hornberger was a two-time winner against Southern Columbia in boys track and field as he won the shot put with a throw of 35-6 and also the discus with a throw of 95-5. Loyalsock’s Andres Quintana won the 1,600 in 2:16.25 and Keanu Singh won for the Lancers n the 400 (54.92).

Lewisburg defeated Danville, 77-72. Thomas Hess won in two events as he picked up a win in the 800 in 2:05.35 and the 3,200 in 9:40.64. Anthony Bhangdia won the triple jump with a distance of 44 feet, 1 inch. James Koconis won the 400 in 52.98 and Alan Daniel won the 1,600 in 4:34.94.

Canton’s Caiden Williams picked up a trio of wins for the Warriors, but they dropped a season-opening dual to Williamson, 100-45. Williams took first place in both the shot put (37-6) and discus (104-11) and added another first-place finish in the triple jump (38-1 1/2).

• After a strong performance to lead the Lycoming College women’s swimming team to an 88-59 dual meet win over Hood College, first-year swimmer Elisa DiNicola, a Loyalsock grad, earned her first career Middle Atlantic Conference Swimmer of the Week award.

The Warrior rookie is Lycoming’s first MAC Swimmer of the Week since Felicia Sloyer earned the award on Jan. 25, 2016.

DiNicola opened the night on the 200 medley relay team, which posted a winning time of 1:59.77. She followed that with a time of 6:07.04 to take the 500 free and edged out Brown (2:11.45) in the 200 free (2:10.41).
