Local roundup: Pequignot and Swank help Hughesville win in baseball

Dylon Pequignot and Devin Swank combined on a three-hitter and struck out 15 as Hughesville defeated Milton, 10-5, and improved to 3-0 Monday.

Pequignot struck out 12 in five innings and also hit an RBI double. Jed Webb homered and Hughesville scored four seventh-inning runs to break things open after Milton pulled within 6-5 in the sixth. Carter Cowburn was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Swank and Dylan Farnsworth added doubles.

Keon Burkholder struck out seven batters over three innings and St. John Neumann exploded for seven runs in the seventh inning of a 19-9 win over CMVT.

JerVal Weeks-Shuler had a trio of hits and Jeff Hamilton drove in four runs for the Knights.

Loyalsock fell to Central Columbia on the road in the Lancers’ first game of the season, 4-0, in high school baseball. Dylan Harris led the Blue Jays by going 2 for 3. Two Central Columbia pitchers combined to no-hit Loyalsock.

• Summer McNulty went 3 for 3 with a double and three runs and Hannah Winter threw a five-hitter as Loyalsock thumped Southern Columbia, 11-1, in five innings in softball.

Loyalsock (2-0) scored in every inning and Cassie Gee doubled. The Lancers have a big game today against defending District 4 Class AAA champion Bloomsburg.

• Montoursville blanked Loyalsock, 5-0, in boys tennis. Andrew Stapp, Jared Matlack and Tyler Gilbert won at Nos. 1-3 singles, respectively. Gilbert posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.

The win improves the Warriors to 6-0 as Montoursville hosts Milton today.

Central Mountain won the first two singles matches without surrendering a game, but Selisgrove rallied for wins in the final three matches in a 3-2 win over the Wildcats in high school boys tennis. David Lindsay won at No. 1 singles for CM, 6-0, 6-0, and Ethan Hall added a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles.

• Angie King tossed a six-hitter in the opener and Morgan Klosko hit a grand slam in the second game as Lycoming split a doubleheader with Messiah in college softball Monday, winning the opener 5-1, and dropping the nightcap, 12-6. The Warriors made King a winner after a career-high eight strikeouts by scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lycoming took a three-run lead after two innings in the second game, thanks in part to Klosko’s first-inning grand slam, but Messiah pounded out 21 hits to the comeback win.

• Southern Tioga’s Bridger Lehman placed sixth over the weekend at the Keystone State Championship wrestling tournament. Lehman went 4-3 in the 110-pound weight class in the 8-and-under division. Three of Lehman’s four wins came by fall, and he added another 4-1 win.

Owen Lisowski also earned a state medal for Southern Tioga by placing eighth at 75 pounds in the 8-and-under classification. Lisowki opened with two consecutive wins before eventually finishing with a 3-3 record to take eighth. He scored two falls and picked up a 6-0 win in the blood round to earn a spot on the podium.
