High school roundup: Muncy rallies and clinches playoff berth

Muncy pounded out 14 hits, Ross Eyer homered and Max Rymsza earned his fourth win as the Indians clinched a Class AA playoff berth and defeated Millville, 10-6. Eyer went 3 for 4 while Gio Persun, Branson Eyer, Loudon Boring and Kaydn Berry all had two hits. Chase Crawley closed out the win with a scoreless seventh inning and Muncy (10-5) won its fifth straight game. The Indians rallied from a 2-1 fourth-inning deficit and scored four times in the sixth and seventh innings after Millville tied it.

JerVal Weeks-Shuler and Keon Burkholder combined on a one-hitter but St. John Neumann was no-hit in a 2-0 loss to St. Joseph’s. Weeks-Shuler and Burkholder combined for 10 strikeouts.

Canton rallied from a four-run deficit and scored 10 seventh-inning runs to defeat Towanda, 16-7 in its first game in over a week. The Warriors still trailed by a run in the seventh before erupting. Cooper Kitchen went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and Joel Schoonover had two hits while earning the win. Weston Bellows went 2 for 4 with an RBI double and Canton (12-2) won its seventh straight game.

Hughesville split two games, defeating Warrior Run, 13-0 in five innings and losing to Midd-West, 6-2. Carter Cowburn had a big game against Warrior Run, going 4 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Devin Swank tripled and Jed Webb and Aiden Barlett each had a hit and two RBIs. Dylon Pequignot struck out eight in 5 2/3 innings against Midd-West but the Mustangs scored two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to break a 2-2 tie. Clayton Poust had two hits for the Spartans (8-7).

MacKenzie Weaver threw a five-hit shutout and struck out nine as Montoursville blanked South Williamsport, 9-0 in softball action. The Warriors collected 12 hits with Kaitlyn Klotz and Jocelyn Jean each having two. Natalie Bennett added a double and Montoursville scored in each of the first four innings. Gianna Godfrey had two hits for South.

Wellsboro won its fourth game this season in walk-off fashion and clinched a District 4 Class AAA playoff berth, edging Cowanesque Valley, 6-5 in 10 innings. Kerrah Clymer threw a three-hitter and both Abbye Cavanaugh and Jessica Lohr had three hits. Lohr also drove in two runs as did Jena Boyce who produced two hits. Maddi Bordas added two hits as Wellsboro improved to 10-4.
