ROUNDUP: West End rallies to stay undefeated at 14U states
Aidan Vogt scored on an RBI fielder’s choice in the bottom of the seventh inning to keep West End undefeated at the 14U state tournament with a 3-2 win over Haverford.
West End rallied in the bottom of the seventh after Haverford scored a pair of runs to tie the game in the top half of the inning. Royce Bowes and Trent Wentzel hit back-to-back one-out singles in the bottom of the seventh, and after an intentional walk loaded the bases Haverford brought in a fifth infielder. Christian Franzen fought off a breaking ball and Vogt broke for the plate and was able to score when the throw home short-hopped the catcher.
Ethan Nagy and Angelo Birch had a pair of hits for West End. Birch also struck out seven batters over five innings as West End’s starting pitcher.
West End also won Saturday’s opener against UDHL, 7-3, despite recording just a pair of hits. West End was also the beneficiary of eight walks.
West End continues pool play Tuesday against Mifflin County at 2:30 p.m.
• Keystone won the 8-10 baseball District 12 championship on Saturday after winning a pair of games against East Lycoming. Keystone defeated East Lycoming, 13-5, Friday to force a decisive championship game Saturday which it won, 10-0.
No information from Saturday’s game was available, but Keystone pounded out 13 hits in Friday’s game, including leadoff hitter Heath Marino going 4 for 4 with four runs scored. Carter Frank drove in three runs and Bryon Rote hit a two-run home run for Keystone.
