Montoursville, Loyalsock doubles teams move onto District 4 semifinals in girls tennis

EVAN WHEATON/Sun-Gazette Loyalsock’s Anna Hall hits back a ball in the first round of the District 4 girls tennis doubles tournament. Hall and teammate Mia Blas advanced to the District 4 girls tennis doubles semifinals on Wednesday at the Central PA Tennis Center at 1 p.m.

Anna Hall and Mia Blas hadn’t played doubles all year for Loyalsock, but the duo entered the District 4 girls tennis doubles tournament at Williamsport high school on Monday as the No. 2 seed.

“I like Anna, and I trust Anna, so I figured we’d do pretty good,” Blas said.

It’s safe to say they did.

The Lancers will be represented by Blas and Hall in the semifinals at the Central PA Tennis Center Wednesday. They will face Montoursville’s Kara Mann and Alaina Marchioni.

The other semifinal will feature Selinsgrove’s Fionna Finnerty and Avery DeFazio against Danville’s Marianna Arnabar and Sarah Bhanushali.

EVAN WHEATON/Sun-Gazette Loyalsock’s Mia Blas prepares to serve in the first round of the District 4 girls tennis doubles tournament on Monday at Williamsport.

Loyalsock had a close shave against Montgomery when Jenna Waring and Cortney Smith took the first set 7-5. Blas and Hall mirrored that and grinded out a 7-5 set win in retaliation right after.

“(We were) focusing on staying on the sides and focusing on what kind of shots they place, and just keeping a good mindset,” Hall said on the tight match against the Red Raiders, having taken the third set 6-1 to advance in the tournament.

Hall and Blas defeated Bloomsburg’s Mya Coyne and Megan Anderson, 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

“I’ve played with Mia before a lot of times and I thought if we go in with confidence, we could have a really good chance of defeating anybody,” Hall said.

Mann and Marchioni — the Warriors duo and No. 3 seed in the tournament — defeated Central Columbia (6-1, 6-4) in the quarterfinals. They also defeated Hughesville’s Destini Flowers and Breanna Porter (6-0, 6-4) and North-Penn Liberty’s Marissa Griess and Martina Bradford (6-2, 6-1).

EVAN WHEATON/Sun-Gazette Jersey Shore’s Celia Shemory prepares to serve in the first round of the District 4 girls tennis doubles tournament Monday at Williamsport.

Like Hall and Blas, and many other teams in the tournament, Mann and Marchioni had previously only played singles all year for Montoursville.

“I’m really competitive, and Kara’s a really easy player to play with,” Marchioni said.

Mann added, “We kind of just practiced a lot. It came a little easier to us to play doubles I think.”

Montoursville and Loyalsock will be joined by No. 4 Danville’s Mariana Arnabar and Sarah Bhanushali, as well as No. 1 Selinsgrove’s Fiona Finnerty and Avery DeFazio.

The Seals duo previously reached the semifinals in the District 4 singles tournament last week, where they fell to South Williamsport’s Olivia Dorner and Jersey Shore’s Peyton Dincher. They eliminated No. 8 Lewisburg’s Grace Hilkert and Bridget Kinnaman (6-1, 6-0) to punch their ticket to the semifinals.

EVAN WHEATON/Sun-Gazette Jersey Shore’s Haley Shadle chases down a ball in the first round of the District 4 girls tennis doubles tournament on Monday at Williamsport.

Kylie Kilgore and Gina Budman made a deep run for the No. 5 Spartans, before Danville eliminated them (6-2, 6-3) in the quarterfinals.

The semifinals are slated for a 1 p.m. start at the Central PA Tennis Center on Wednesday.
