Penn State women’s basketball falls to No. 13 Iowa State

ESTERO, Fla. – The Penn State women’s basketball team fell 93-59 against No. 13 Iowa State on Saturday at the Gulf Coast Showcase. The Lady Lions dropped to 4-2 on the season, while the Cyclones improved to 6-0.

The Lady Lions will take on Kent State on Sunday on the final day of the Gulf Coast Showcase. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. with a broadcast on FloHoops.

Makenna Marisa tallied 11 points, for her sixth-straight double-figure game, and added five rebounds and two assists. Ali Brigham notched 10 points, three rebounds and two steals. It was her fourth double-figure game of the season. Maddie Burke and Leilani Kapinus each contributed nine points. Penn State shot 32 percent from the field.

The Cyclones were led by Aubrey Joens’ 21 points and 11 rebounds. Ashley Joens and Beatriz Jordao each had 13 points, while Lexi Donarski added 12. Iowa State shot 47 percent from the field.

Iowa State led 24-10 after the first quarter, ending the period on a 14-3 run. Aubrey Joens hit a pair of treys during the run. Anna Camden scored five points in the quarter for the Lady Lions.

In the second quarter, Penn State got a pair of baskets in the paint from Brigham and Kapinus to cut the deficit to 26-14. The Cyclones got hot from three, including a pair of makes by Ashley Joens and one by Aubrey Joens to extend their lead to 44-21. A layup by Brigham, a three by Kelly Jekot and a jumper by Camden sent Penn State into the break trailing 45-28. Penn State shot 50 percent in the quarter.

A pair of free throws by Kapinus and a layup by Marisa cut the deficit to 48-32 early in the third quarter. Iowa State responded with a 9-2 run to push its lead to 57-33 with Jordao contributing five during the run. A pair of free throws each by Brigham and Marisa and a layup by Burke cut the deficit to 60-39 late in the third quarter.
