Lock Haven women fall at home to Kutztown

LOCK HAVEN – The Lock Haven women’s basketball team ran into one of the top PSAC teams in Kutztown on Wednesday night at the Thomas FieldHouse. The Bears put on a 3-point shooting display as the road-favorites and downed the Bald Eagles, 65-44, behind a successful night from deep.

Kutztown connected on a total of nine 3s in the victory to get win No. 14 on the season. The conference leader in wins trailed 4-3 early to the Bald Eagles, but then never looked back. Abbey Hearn, who finished with a game-high five 3s, led Kutztown with 23 points in the win. Outside of Hearn, Alexis Smith and Reese Derr could not be contained. The two combined for 19 points behind four 3’s.

“We got to play a lot of our young kids. We lost one of our top players a coupe minutes into the game, so that was a little bit tough. We have a young group, we lost two of very early in the season. We’re going to have some ups and downs this year,” Lock Haven coach Jennifer Smith said. “The good thing is that our freshmen are getting a lot of game minutes and there’s nothing else you can replicate like that. We’re going to take some bruises; they’re playing hard and learning. We get to play Kutztown again; we’re going to keep improving.”

After LHU’s brief lead at the beginning, Kutztown put the pedal all the way to the floor. The Bears used a 13-4 stretch midway through the first to lay the groundwork of the game. Hearn was phenomenal in the opening frame as the sophomore forward sank two 3s in the first quarter. Kutztown held an, 18-13, advantage through the first 10 minutes.

The Bald Eagles were limited to just eight points in the second quarter as the Bears went on to win the quarter by a tally of 18-6. The hot-shooting Kutztown squad did just enough to keep the advantage above double digits.

Kutztown led 36-21 at the break. At halftime, Hearn had 16 points and Kutztown had an 8-1 advantage from deep. The Bears shot abnormally well in the opening half, hitting at a rate of 80% from beyond the arc.

LHU had a solid third quarter where it saw players such as Ahnera Parker and Jackie Fetsko find success scoring. Parker–who eclipsed the 1000-point mark earlier this month–finished with 13 points and six rebounds. Festsko also scored 13 and was behind Parker with five rebounds of her own.

The pair did all they could to make things interesting in the third in an attempt to crawl back, but Kutztown had its highest scoring quarter occur in the third. The Bears took a 22-point lead into the final quarter of play.

The fourth quarter was when the Bald Eagles played deep into its bench as Kutztown held a commanding lead. Role players such as Fetsko, Selena Mann and Audrey Reigl saw meaningful time on the court. Kutztown went on to close the game and secure its eight win in-a-row.

“They shot really well,” Smith said in reference to Kutztown. “We needed to do a little better in our communication and our stunts and our closeouts. It’s tough when a team’s hitting everything. There’s not much you can do about it. They’re a good team, that’s why they’re in first place.”
