Penn State men’s basketball loses to Iowa on the road

IOWA CITY — After a close first half, Iowa pulled away late in the second to come out on top of the Penn State men’s basketball team, 68-51, on Saturday afternoon at Carver-Hawkeye Arena as the Nittany Lions played their second of three-straight road games.

“Hats off to Iowa. It’s a hard place to play, it’s a great environment, the fans were into it like they always are, and those guys did what they needed to do to win,” Penn State coach Micah Shrewsberry said. “We hung around, we kept it close in the first half, we talked about transition and rebounding being keys to the game and we were doing that in the first half. They flipped it on us. They really punished us on the glass in the second half and that’s when they’re tough to stop.”

After a close first half in which the Nittany Lions dominated the boards with a plus-12 rebound margin, the Hawkeyes came out of the locker room and turned the rebound margin in their favor to control the second half and come out with the victory.

“They’re getting offensive rebounds, they’re getting easy baskets, they’re getting to the free throw line, now they’re getting going, 3s get falling, and everything else,” Shrewsberry said. “They were the tougher team tonight. They showed their makeup in terms of who they are and what they needed to do to win and respond from the loss to Rutgers so hats off to them.”

Senior Jalen Pickett led Penn State with 14 points and added three rebounds, three assists and two steals to his stat line. Senior Myles Dread had nine points behind a trio of 3-pointers. Senior Greg Lee had a team-high eight rebounds and added six points.

The Nittany Lions travel to Indiana on Wednesday. Penn State won the first matchup this year against the Hoosiers, 61-58. The game’s set for an 8:30 p.m. tipoff.
