Bobby Gardner sets South Williamsport program record, area wrestlers advance in District 4 Class AA tournament

After a brief word with South Williamsport coach Eric Gerber, Bobby Gardner dressed down and trotted along the corridor off the side of the Magic Dome.

While other wrestlers were preparing for their quarterfinal matches, Gardner was also preparing for his next challenge. While Gardner was still warmed up, he got a quick workout in following Day 1 of the District 4 Class AA tournament.

It was during the preliminary round that the senior etched his name in school history, notching his 128th win by pinning Mount Carmel’s Brady Wolkoski.

“It really makes me happy, I know it makes my coaches happy, my family and friends happy for me. It’s just another step to keep the program going, keep it getting better,” Gardner said on his new record. “I’m excited to come back (tomorrow) and help the program.”

Gardner stretched that record to 129 wins after pinning Towanda’s Rylee Sluyter in one minute, 28 seconds during the quarterfinals.

Ranked No. 2 in the state at 126 pounds for Class AA, Gardner started the year with his 100th win at the Darren Klingerman Invitational, where he won out his class. Gardner took sixth in states last year as well.

Above all else, the senior has remained consistent.

“It’s really been (about) keeping my mindset good, my conditioning up,” Gardner said. “Feeling good overall, even if I don’t feel the best after losing weight, a tough practice, injuries. I’ll still have to keep my mindset right and believe I’m the best.”

In the Central Sectional last weekend, Gardner faced the lone wrestler ranked higher than him in the final bout. Muncy’s Scott Johnson took a 3-0 decision — and his 100th career win — over Gardner.

Johnson posted a 20-2 tech fall on Danville’s Gavin Haggerty in the quarterfinals. While on opposite sides of the bracket, Gardner knows he’ll see Johnson again soon.

“When we rewatched the match and looked back on it, we talked about positioning,” Gardner said on his loss to Johnson. “It’s a winnable match, very winnable. We just need to keep progressing and we only need to win it once. It’s just the first battle of the war.”

Ty Nixon (160) and Austin Johnson (285) also picked up quarterfinal wins for Muncy. Landon Lorson (189) added a win for the Mounties by taking a 4-3 decision over Southern Columbia’s Jude Bremigen.

On the beat off all-time win leaders, Montgomery’s Devon Deem posted a 17-3 major on Southern Columbia’s Louden Murphy. The Red Raiders had another quarterfinal win from Conner Harer, the top-ranked 145-pounder in the state. Harer pinned Southern Columbia’s Jaymen Golden in 23 seconds.

Montoursville’s David Kennedy has carried his standout freshman campaign well into the individual postseason. Ranked No. 10 in the state at 120 pounds — who took eight at the Powerade, Pennsylvania’s largest tournament — Kennedy made two pins in 37 seconds apiece on Day 1.

Branden Wentzel (113) and Isaac Cory (189) joined Kennedy in padding the Warriors’ quarterfinal wins.

Jersey Shore 189-pounder Hadyn Packer scored nine points in the first period against North Penn-Liberty’s Gaven Sexauer. He piled on six more in the second frame for a tech fall.

Brock Weiss joined Packer in the Bulldogs’ win column after he took an 8-0 major against Midd-West’s Matthew Smith.
