Local roundup: Bucknell’s Owen earns PL honor

Bucknell junior Michael Owen on Monday earned one of the six spots on the Academic All-Patriot League men’s tennis team.

Owen, a junior from Folkestone, England, was a mainstay in the Bison singles and doubles lineup all season, and he has maintained a 3.80 cumulative grade-point average as an economics major.

Owen, who represents the men’s tennis team on the Bucknell Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, enjoyed a strong 2021-22 season on the courts. He played primarily in the No. 3 singles position and finished with a 17-16 overall record, including a 13-11 mark in dual matches and a 4-2 record against Patriot League opponents.

In doubles, Owen finished 14-13 overall, mainly in the No. 2 spot, although he did go 3-2 at No. 1 doubles.

Owen earned Patriot League Player of the Week honors on Feb. 1 after he won a doubles match against Michigan State and a singles match against Toledo.

• Penn College seniors Olivia Hemstock and Kyla Benner and junior Jordan Specht were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III All-Region third team.

It’s the second consecutive year that Hemstock and Specht earned all-region honors and Benner’s first all-region nod.

Hemstock finished the 2022 campaign with her second United East first team selection after finishing the regular season with a .462 batting average, on 42 hits, with six doubles, one triple, and 37 RBI.

A United East all-conference selection escaped Specht last season despite slashing .463/.667/.492. She picked up 50 hits, including 15 doubles, two triples, and one home run and batted in 37 runners.

Benner earned United East Pitcher of the Year honors after tossing two perfect games during the regular season. She started in 18 regular season games and finished with a 13-5 record. Benner threw 95.2 innings, allowing just 67 hits, 30 runs (20 earned), while posting a 1.88 ERA. Benner struck out 127 batters and walked 18.
