Travelers win the North Branch title with weekend sweep

The Hughesville Traveler baseball dynasty continues growing stronger.

The Travelers captured a sixth North Branch championship since 2013 last Saturday, sweeping two championship games from North Berwick, 3-1 and 7-2 in the best-of-three series. Hughesville won the opener in eight innings before cruising in the second game, building a 5-0 lead through five innings. The pitching was dominant with Kelly Holdren, Ryan Wyland, Austin Gray, Joel Verrico and Owen Berry allowing just seven hits, while the Hughesville offense pounded out 17 hits.

Holdren overpowered North Berwick in the first game, throwing a complete game five-hitter and striking out 10. Ethan Showers gave his best friend an awesome tribute as well as the Travelers won in dramatic fashion.

Showers’ dog passed away in the morning, but Showers honored him after arriving late and slamming a go-ahead home run in the eighth inning. He then was a force in the second game, going 3 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs as Hughesville outhit North Berwick, 10-2. Devin Swank belted two hits and Mike Laychur and Ryan McClain each delivered big hits with McClain driving in three runs. Ryan Wyland added an RBI single and threw four innings of no-hit baseball.

Verrico and Berry were tough in relief, striking out five in two innings and helping the Travelers clinch another championship.
