Crosscutters win second-half MLB Draft League Championship by beating Frederick

The Williamsport Crosscutters won the second-half MLB Draft League Championship on Sunday with a 5-3 win on the road against the Frederick Keys.

The Crosscutters (24-13) will head to West Virginia for the MLB Draft League Championship game on Tuesday evening at 6:35 p.m.

Designated hitter E.J. Taylor hit a three-run home run in the third inning to help Williamsport win in just five innings as the game was called early due to rain. The Crosscutters went down 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning with five of the first six Keys batters reaching base. Third baseman Chris Swanberg cut Frederick’s lead in half in the top of the second with an RBI double.

Taylor’s three-run blast to right-center field put Williamsport ahead, 4-2. First baseman Carter Mize followed suit two batters later with a solo home run to right field to extend the lead, 5-2.

The game went into an hour-long rain delay before play resumed in the third. The Keys quickly reloaded the bases, but only got one run from a sacrifice fly. Starting pitcher Blair Frederick shut down the Keys with scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth.
