Wyoming Valley West at Williamsport preview

Valley West PPG–12.6, YPG–143.8, PPA–33.0

Valley West notes: The Spartans (0-6) are seeking their first win and are coming off a 41-13 loss against Berwick. Valley West played that game without leading rusher Isaiah Cobb. The junior topped 1,500 yards rushing a year ago and has 249 through five games this season. He caught a 47-yard touchdown pass in a Week 5 loss against Dallas. The Spartans showed their potential in Week 2 when they nearly upset undefeated Scranton, falling 21-14. They have struggled since then, however, and have been held to 14 or fewer points in each game. If Cobb cannot play tonight look for Tyler Mattis and Paul Riggs to get the bulk of the carries after they combined for 21 attempts against Berwick. Quarterback Lucas Zdancewicz has thrown for 450 yards and also run for two touchdowns. Three players have more than 100 yards receiving, including Maki Wells who has seven catches for 164 yards.

Valley West player to watch–Jake Dubaskas: The sophomore linebacker leads the team in tackles for loss with six and also has a sack. He was all over the field against Crestwood, making a career-high 14 tackles.

Williamsport PPG–22.3, YPG–234.3; PPA–32.7, YPA–340.5

Williamsport notes: Williamsport is hoping to keep the momentum going after snapping a three-game losing streak and defeating Central Mountain, 48-16, a week ago. The starting defense allowed just three points and Jamaire Harden returned an interception for a touchdown. Yazhir Slaughter nearly returned another pick for a score and Jakhia Kline was a force off the edge, producing a sack and hurrying the quarterback on several throws. The offense showed its best balance of the season and quarterbacks George Whaley and Caleb Williamson combined to throw for 135 yards. Whaley found Kline for a 39-yard touchdown on a fourth down play and ran for a 39-yard touchdown on another fourth down. Harden caught a season-high 10 passes and the offensive line surged as Nasir Hennigan ran for 135 of his 155 yards in the first quarter when Williamsport scored 28 points. Hennigan is second among area rushers with 678 yards, scoring 10 touchdowns and going over 100 yards three times. Whaley has scored as a runner and passer while also leading the team in catches. Williamsport must be careful on kickoffs after surrendering a 90-yard touchdown and 65-yard return against Central Mountain. Connor Poole provides the special teams a boost, establishing himself as one of the area’s best punters and kickers. He has six field goals over the last two seasons. Williamsport is battling for a playoff spot in the District 2-11 field and must crack the top eight to do so. It enters tonight in 10th.

Williamsport player to watch–Nariq Burks: Whether playing defensive end or linebacker the last two years, Burks has made a big impact and been one of the unit’s top players. Burks led the team in sacks as a sophomore a year ago and made his presence felt early and often against Central Mountain. Burks was in on several tackles and also consistently harassed the quarterback as Williamsport forced three turnovers.

Outlook: Williamsport is seeking its third straight win in this annual series but cannot afford to let down. If the Millionaires build off last week’s performance they have a chance to really get some momentum going.
