Mount Carmel PPG–33.5, PPA–22.5; YPG–346.8, YPA–267.9

Mount Carmel notes: Mount Carmel has moved up from 2A where Southern Columbia ended its season five times in the final from 2017-22 before downing it in last year’s semifinals. The Tornadoes are trying to win their first district title since 2011 and feature a potent offense which produced 419 yards in a 55-26 quarterfinal win against Milton. The Torandoes gave top-seeded Danville its toughest game this season, losing in the final minute, 19-16. It rebounded from a Week 10 loss against Shamokin in impressive fashion last week, building a 48-12 halftime lead. Quarterback Gavin Marshalek has thrown for 1,750 yards and his 132 completions are the third single-season total in program history. Sophomore wide receiver Jaylen Delaney has shattered the season record for Mount Carmel catches (63) and also ran for 91 yards and two touchdowns against Milton. Sophomore Cooper Karycki has run for 905 yards and Mount Carmel has received a late-season lift with Luke Blessing, a 1000-yard rusher last season, returning from injury. Freshman Jason Klokis went over 100 tackles last week and averages 9.7 per game. Chase Balichick is a good receiver who also has four interceptions and Ben Miller averages 8.8 tackles per game.

Mount Carmel player to watch–Al Bailey: The senior linebacker sets a physical tone and has a team-high four sacks, as well as 11 tackles for loss. Also a reliable fullback, Bailey has run for 191 yards and two scores, while providing strong lead blocking.

Lewisburg PPG–31.5, PPA–13.7; YPG–313.5, YPA–259.8

Lewisburg notes: Lewisburg (9-1) is having its best season since 2010 and is trying to defeat Mount Carmel for the first time since that season which produced a district championship and state semifinal appearance. The Green Dragons were off last week after earning a quarterfinal bye and are coming off consecutive comeback wins against Montoursville and Mifflinburg. Lewisburg has rallied from deficits of eight or more three times this season and also gave Shamokin a scare, losing 17-12 in Week 8. Jeremiah Davis finished second among area rushers and ran for 337 yards and five touchdowns against Mifflinburg. Quarterback Chase Wenrich has played well down the stretch and he and receivers Nick Coleman and Jaylen Walker made key plays on a go-ahead scoring drive against Montoursville. Walker caught three passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns in last year’s quarterfinal win against Montoursville and Coleman sparked the Mifflinburg comeback, returning a kickoff 76 yards for a touchdown. Linebackers Quin Michaels and Danan Alabakoff each are having excellent seasons for a defense which has bent but rarely broke. Lewisburg made four red zone stops against Montoursville and Tyler Downs provided a crucial sack to end one of those scoring threats. Downs has 10 tackles for loss, while players like Andrew Smith, Hayes Schumacher and Nate Malusis, among others, have provided a strong interior push.

Lewisburg player to watch–Sudeep Yenireddy: The senior safety has enjoyed a breakout season and is second on the team in tackles, averaging 6.9 per game. Yenireddy has made 31 tackles in his last three games and also has an interception and fumble recovery.

Winner plays: Either No. 1 Danville at No. 4 Montoursville

Outlook: At this point of the season, pretty much all the games look like potentially great ones on paper. This one looks really, really good. These are teams strong across the board and it likely will come down to a few key plays which determine the outcome.
