Williamsport (AAAA), CM (AAA) both begin state tournament runs in volleyball
Williamsport enters today’s state tournament with a 15-6 record and matches up against District 11 runner-up Parkland (16-7). The Millionaires host that first-round matchup at 6 p.m. The winner will face either District 1 champion Unionville or District 1 fifth-place finisher Spring-Ford on Saturday.
Williamsport won its first-ever district championship last week to secure a trip to the state tournament. The Millionaires defeated Delaware Valley on the road to get to the state tournament.
Following its first District 6 title win in program history, in which the Wildcats scraped by Hollidaysburg, 3-2, last Wednesday, the Central Mountain volleyball program will look to carry that success into its first stint at the PIAA Class AAA Championships, starting this evening.
For its first-round matchup, Central Mountain will be kicking off its run a long way from home, making the three-hour trip to Mars High School to take on the WPIAL champions out of District 7.
Mars (18-4) is returning to states for the first time since 2012, when it was a part of Class AA. Then, the Planets had made it all the way to the semifinals before enduring defeat at the hands of eventual champion Fort LeBoeuf.
Under third-year head coach Chip McMann and behind a star-studded cast including the likes of outside hitter Gabrielle Beaubrun, setter Sophia Hardy and libero Reese Walizer, the Wildcats have seen tremendous success this season, culminating in a historic title.
