Local roundup: Hughesville girls win battle of defending district champions

Hughesville played an outstanding all-around game and exacted some revenge Wednesday, winning at Central Columbia, 60-41. The Spartans (13-1) lead throughout in a battle of teams who entered a combined 21-2, snapped Central’s nine-game winning streak and avenged two defeats against the four-time defending District 4 Class AAAA champions from last year. Maddie Smith scored 17 points, Alli Anstadt 15 and Ava Snyder 13.

Allyssa King hit two first-quarter 3-pointers, helping Hughesville open an 18-10 advantage which grew to 12 by halftime.

Abby Akers scored 19 points and South Williamsport won for the second time in three nights, defeating CMVT, 48-8. Akers scored 17 of her points in the first three quarters and Ella Moore scored seven for South (6-5) which has won three of its last four games. Carly Quimby and Maddie Reidy each added six points.

Addi Gresh continued coming on strong and scored a career-high 18 points while producing her second straight double-double in Muncy’s 61-18 win at Sullivan County.

Gresh scored 16 first-half points to help set the tone and added 10 rebounds and four blocks. Addi Eyer scored a season-high 20 points, adding eight steals, five assists and four rebounds. Ava Eyer also collected a double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 10 boards as Muncy (9-3) won for the eighth time in nine games.

Haley Litzelman continued putting up big numbers, scoring 19 points, grabbing 17 rebounds and making seven steals as North Penn-Liberty defeated Sayre, 43-9. Kaylee Graham also had a double-double for the Mounties (5-6), scoring a season-high 16 points, pulling down 14 boards and making seven steals. Kendall Graham added eight points.

Lydia Roupp played her best high school game, erupting for a career-high 21 points while helping Canton defeat Williamson, 52-28. Roupp scored 11 of her 21 points in the first quarter when Canton (8-5) opened the game on a 17-0 run. Kendall Kitchen added 13 points and Cailyn Van Noy eight for the Warriors, who have won three straight games.

Maddie McNamara scored 19 points and Kameron Lightner produced her eighth double-double but Towanda defeated North Penn-Mansfield, 65-52. McNamara added seven points, six steals and four assists, while Lightner went for 12 points and 17 rebounds. Claire Dominick added eight points and three assists.

Bre Nixon scored eight points and Savana Smith six but St. John Neumann struggled offensively in a 48-22 loss at Benton. The Knights (8-5) were limited to eight first half points.

• In boys basketball, Ben Dalton enjoyed a big night, scoring 26 points, grabbing 15 rebounds and adding three assists as Jersey Shore defeated Shikellamy, 61-54. It was Dalton’s ninth double-double this season and Landon Lathan added 12 points and Tucker Hanna eight points with six rebounds. Jersey Shore (8-4) has matched its win total this year from the previous three seasons combined.

Eleven players scored, including Shea Ulmer who had a game-high 16 points, as Montoursville thumped Milton, 71-26 for its second win in three nights. Ulmer added four rebounds and four assists, while Kingston Fisher had 13 points and six rebounds. Todd Crawford scored eight points with three assists and Brennan Imbro made a run at a double-double with eight points and seven rebounds. Jimmy Mussina added seven assists for the Warriors (9-6) who built a 35-17 halftime lead.

Cooper Mowry scored 20 points and dealt six assists but Lewisburg dropped a 55-53 heartbreaker at Danville in a battle between District 4 Class AAAA title contenders. The Green Dragons (9-5) erased an early seven-point deficit before Danville rallied from five down in the final quarter. Neyshawn Mabry scored 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds for Lewisburg, while Rebira Jemana had nine points and 10 rebounds.

Jalil Coates had a strong night, scoring 16 points but Southern Columbia built an 18-point halftime lead and handed Loyalsock its fourth straight loss, 62-44. Brecken Gusick scored 10 points and Cadyn Plank nine for the Lancers (5-9).

• Montoursville suffered its first loss of the year, falling against Bishop McDevitt, 45-15. Montoursville’s Gage Wentzel pinned Ryan Lengal in 2:48 at 172 pounds.

Bishop McDevitt built a 15-0 lead after winning the first three bouts. The Warriors got it to a 15-9 deficit, but Montoursville would only win two more bouts the remainder of the match.

Owen Kleinman won at 189 with an 11-4 decision vs. Landon Blouch.

At 285, Landon Morehart earned an 8-4 TB1 win against David Smith. Montoursville also saw Teli Bobotas win at 121 with a hard-fought 6-5 decision against Liam Lawler.

Despite having to forfeit four matches in Wednesday’s dual match against Milton, Warrior Run was able to overcome the 24-point hole, winning six of the seven competitive matches on the night, all six coming by either pin or tech fall.

Reagan Milheim, Max Wirnsberger, Tyler Ulrich and Isaiah Betz all logged first-period pins, with Betz securing the fastest pin of the night at 32 seconds against Michael Runkle. Cade Snyder secured a second-period pin at 139 and Chase Wirnsberger defeated Jordan Sassaman by second-period tech fall, 21-4. For Milton, Gavin Whitenight earned its lone competitive win, defeating Blake Dion by fall in the first period.

Sugar Valley cruised past Loyalscok, 65-3, in a dual. Loyalsock’s win came at 107 where Owen Peck secured a hard-fought 5-0 decision against Leroy Culvey. Loyalsock’s Connor Phillips was pinned at 133 by Gavin Matter in 52 seconds and at 152, Loyalsock’s Cage Best lost by tech fall, 16-0, 5:21.

• Mansfield men’s basketball fell to Millersville University in rout fashion on Wednesday night at home, as the Marauders bested it, 81-57. Sterling Scott led the Mountaineers with 13 points and eight rebounds. Lleyton Fried was Mansfield’s second-leading scorer, adding 12 points and shooting 40% from the floor. And Scott Woodring added another 11 points and tied for the team lead with eight rebounds.
