Local roundup: Montgomery’s Murphy wins title at Coal Cracker, Hughesville girls finish second as a team

Montgomery’s Emily Murphy was a 126-pound champion at the Jim Thorpe Coal Cracker Tournament, as she cruised her way to the finals. Murphy won her first two bouts in a combined 60 seconds before pinning Palmerton’s Cassidy Merkel in 1:56. In the championship semifinals, Murphy secured a 15-0, 2:00 tech fall win against Leighton’s Lillian Klotz. She then pinned Northeast Bradford’s Anaiah Kolesar in the finals in 2:32.

Montgomery’s Briella Walk was a runner-up at the tournament as she lost in the 132 final to Athens’ Hanna Rathbun.

The Red Raiders’ also saw Jenna Houseknecht take fifth at 108 when she secured a fall in 3:45 over Big Springs’ Evelyn Hippensteel.

Houseknecht was leading 7-2 before the secured the fall.

Hughesville’s girls wrestling team finished second out of 58 teams at the Coal Cracker Tournament as the Spartans saw numerous wrestlers advance.

Hughesville’s Arianna Moore took home a fourth-place finish at 114 after she was pinned by Big Springs’ Jordyn Suhina in 2:05.

Moore came up shy in the championship semifinals and was pinned in 3:13, dropping her into the consolation bracket where she reached the third-place final bout.

Hughesville’s Avery Puderbach was pinned at 132 in the fifth-place finals against Liberty’s Doniya Anwari in 4:59. Anwari held a 7-2 lead before she managed to get Puderbach onto her back for the pin.

Puderbach reached the championship semifinals before falling into the consolation bracket.

Hughesville saw returning state qualifier Alexis Kurzawa take third at 150 when she secured a first-period fall against Northeast Bradford’s Ava Lambert in 1:26.

The Spartans saw Deja Roark finish eighth at 126 when she lost by fall to Upper Dublin’s Jada Dillard by fall in 4:16. Roark led the bout with a 10-4 edge in points before Dillard secured the fall.

At 138, Hughesville’s Abbigale Bowman secured a fall in 1:16 against Executive Education Academy’s Amy Loza for a seventh-place finish.

• Jalil Coates had a big night, scoring a career-high 18 points and grabbing 13 rebounds but a late comeback attempt fell short as Bloomsburg defeated Loyalsock, 52-50. Freshmen Brecken Gusick added 13 points for the Lancers (5-10) who are in danger of missing the postseason for the first time since 2000.

Montoursville had a 23-point fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to defeat Mount Carmel as the Warriors fell, 79-62. Shea Ulmer led Montoursville with 18 points and was the only double-digit scorer for the Warriors.

Mount Carmel scored at least 18 points in each of the first three quarters. Jude Lazicki led the Red Tornadoes with 28 points.

Jersey Shore defeated Midd-West convincingly, 62-42. Ben Dalton scored 21 points and had eight rebounds with two steals. Jake Lorson had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds with two assists.

Carson Watkins had 10 points and six rebounds, Tucker Hanna had nine points, seven rebounds and six assists while Landon Lathan had six assists.

• Abby Akers led South Williamsport with nine points in the Mounties’ loss to Northwest, 52-26. Coco Kline added six points.

South was held to seven or fewer points in all four quarters.

Northwest had a trio of double-digit scorers led by Ava Ruckle’s 18 points, Ashlyn Hermanofski’s 15 and Jordin Bowman’s 10.

A slow start hurt Lewisburg as the Green Dragons fell on the road to Lourdes, 44-33, to drop to 10-4 overall. Lewisburg scored just one point in the first quarter and trailed 26-8 at halftime.

Maddy Moyers was Lewisburg’s only double-digit scorer with 18 points and had a near double-double with eight rebounds and three steals.

• The Lock Haven men’s wrestling team was a perfect 3-0 at the Davidson Duals on Saturday. The Bald Eagles started the day by downing Brown, 26-10. With the match tied at 10-10, Lock Haven won the last five bouts for the win.

Caden Dobbins (165pounds), Avery Bassett (174) and No. 28th-ranked Colin Fegley (184) all picked up wins by decision. Freshman Tucker Hogan topped Thomas Sandoval by a 9-0 major decision. At 285, Gavin Hoffman, a Montoursville graduate, won with an 8-2 decision against Alex Semenko.

In the second dual of the day, the Bald Eagles topped The Citadel, 33-6.

No. 18th-ranked Wyatt Henson won by tech fall, 21-6,in 5:16 over Thomas Termini at 141. No. 32nd-ranked Lucas Kapusta and Nick Stampoulos picked up wins by decision at 149 and 157, respectively. Kapusta defeated Carson DeRosier, 11-4, and Stampoulos downed Tyler Badgett, 5-3.

Hoffman, who’s nationally ranked at No. 23, closed the dual wtih a pin at 285 in 4:41.

Lock Haven capped off the day with a 53-0 shutout over Morgan State as Lock Haven recorded seven tech falls and two pins. At 125, Sean Logue won by tech fall, 17-0, 4:09, over Julian Dawson. Hunter Gould won by fall in 2:21 at 133 over Shawn Ryncarz.

Henson, Stampoulos and Fegley all won by tech falls as well.

Chase Burke and James Lledo also earned tech fall wins at 165 and 174, respectively. Burke downed COoper Lockhart, 15-0, 2:54 and Lledo needed just 1:56 for the 18-1 win.

At 197, Cael Black picked up a tech fall in 4:24, 17-2. Ethan Miller capped off the dual with a pin in 3:43 over Rasheen Duncan.

The wins move the Bald Eagles to 7-5.

• The Lock Haven men’s indoor track and field team returned to action after the holiday break by competing in the River Hawk Invite and Nittany Lion Open.

Leading the way for Lock Haven in the field was Eric Zalar at the River Hawk Invite in the weight throw, where he placed first with a throw of 52-11.5 which bested his throw in his last time out. Zalar also hit another PSAC qualifying mark.

Also, in the field at the River Hawk Invite, Nathan Fetchkan secured another podium spot for The Haven where he placed second with a throw of 44-05.5.

On the track at the River Hawk Invite the team of Rocky Romani, Sage Carr, Lukas Epitopakis and Cam Lewis placed second with a time of 3:39.91.

• Sophomore Drew Degnan and sophomore Gwyn Fox led the Lycoming College men’s and women’s swimming teams with first-place individual finishes against Juniata and Wilkes in a Landmark Conference double-dual meet.

Degnan finished first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.81, which was only half a second slower than his personal-best set in November. With a 57.38 finish, he also secured a first-place swim in the 100 fly.

For the women’s team, Fox placed first in the 50 free with a time of 27.44. Sophomore Londyn Snyder placed second in the 100 fly with a 1:13.97.

Freshman Sean Martinez recorded a second-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle with a 19:13.28 time, which was only two seconds after the winner from Wilkes and a personal best.

The women’s team (1-11 overall, 0-5 Landmark Conference) fell 78-66 against Wilkes and 138-47 against Juniata. The men’s team (1-10 overall, 0-5 Landmark Conference) fell 115-41 against Wilkes and 120-46 against Juniata.

The Lock Haven women’s swimming team wrapped up a busy weekend of competition by competing in the John A. Pidgeon Memorial Invitational and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Last Chance Meet in Newville.

The pair of meets took place inside the Big Rock High School Natatorium. The morning started off at the John A. Pidgeon Memorial Invitational for Lock Haven.

Leading the way for Lock Haven was Holly Cleworth, who won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.46

Madison Bortner, freshman, finished third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:41.61). The women were in action directly after for the PSAC Last Chance Meet.

Bortner led the way with a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:06.57.

Cleworth finished third in the 100-yard freestyle (56.20), just narrowly being defeated by one second.
