Local roundup: South’s Butler scores career-high 36 in Mounties’ win over Hughesville
A career-high 36 points from Levi Butler helped propel South Williamsport to a 76-68 win in boys basketball at home against Hughesville on Monday evening.
In addition to Butler’s monster game, Radley Knapp scored 14 points and Jordan Baier scored 11.
Hughesville was led by both Brady Morgan and Gavin Knarr who each scored 15 points. Ithel Miley scored 10 and had five rebounds while McKelvey Brink had a near double-double of nine points and nine rebounds. Alex Schultz had six points and six boards.
• Muncy took Northeast Bradford to the wire, but NEB held on lat efor a thrilling 42-41 win in Muncy in girls basketball in a rematch of last year’s District 4 championship.
Muncy had a trio of double-digit scorers. Addison Eyer and Ava Eyer both scored 11 points and Addison Gresh contributed 10. Gresh posted a double-double with a team-high 12 rebounds. Addi Eyer four assists as well.
Coco Kline hit two clutch go-ahead free throws in overtime and South Williamsport roared back from a 13-point fourth quarter deficit to win at Meadowbrook Christian, 53-50. Abby Akers scored 11 of her team-high 19 points during the fourth quarter rally and Ella Moore converted a game-tying layup with 30 seconds remaining. Moore scored 14 points. In addition to Kline making her key foul shots, Maddie Reidy and Carly Quimby also made vital baskets in overtime, helping South (5-5) win its second straight game.
Niyah Tutler scored 11 of her season-high 26 points in the fourth quarter, helping St. John Neumann win at Bucktail, 47-39. Tutler’s clutch play helped the Knights (8-4) win their third straight game and pull away after it was a one-point game entering the fourth. Kallee Johnson and Bre Nixon both scored seven points for Neumann, while Kendall Wagner had 13 for Bucktail, Eva Sockman 10 and Matti Mason nine.
Hughesville cruised past Warrior Run, 84-8. Alli Anstadt scored 16 points and Maddie Smith Maddie Smith led the team with a 19-point performance.
Hughesville scored 24 points in the first quarter and scored 52 points by halftime.
Wellsboro fell to Williamson at home by 11 points, 31-20. Williamson was led by Olivia Nolan’s 15-point effort. Kate Bryant was Wellsboro’s lone double-digit scorer as she scored 10 of the Green Hornets’ 20 points.
Canton held Montgomery to one point in the first quarter and led by 13 en route to a 53-13 rout over the Red Raiders. Canton saw Kendall Kitchen score 21 points and Cailyn VanNoy add 16. Canton held a commanding 31-9 lead going into the half.
• The Mansfield men’s basketball team (5-10, 2-7 PSAC East) lost on the road Monday to Kutztown (5-10, 2-7 PSAC East), 68-62. Julian Wilson and Owen Chambers led the Mounties in scoring, each totaling 13 points on the night.
Sterling Scott followed closely, scoring 12 points and adding six rebounds. Scott Woodring added 7 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Mountaineers held a 14-13 lead at the first media timeout led by a quick five points each from Chambers and Wilson. Kutztown responded with a 24-12 run over the next 6 plus minutes and took a 35-26 lead into the under-eight media timeout.
With 3:19 remaining in the first half, the Mounties trailed by seven (39-32) before Chambers got his second three to fall and pull Mansfield back to within four.
• Serving as their only Monday matchup of the season, the PSAC Eastern Division battle between Mansfield (7-8, 3-6 PSAC East) and Kutztown in women’s basketball saw the Golden Bears edge out the Mounties with a 75-62 victory.
Katie Sheeler led the way for Mansfield with 17 points and dishing out five assists. Sarah Hortin posted her fifth double digit game of the season with 12 and eight rebounds Cydney Stanton rounded out the Mounties with ten points.
After a quiet opening 5-5 start, Kutztown splashed four of the next five baskets in part of a 13-3 to break out to an 18-8 lead. The Golden Bears finished the first quarter with a buzzer beater jumper to hold the 20-11 advantage.
To begin the second quarter, the Mounties found their rhythm and scored the first five buckets, including two three pointers from Kenedy Stroup, with Mansfield gaining their first lead at 23-21.
Hortin earned PSAC Eastern Division Defensive Athlete of the Week honors this week. Racking up seven blocks and four steals on the week, the forward reached new career game highs with four blocks against Shepherd and four steals against Shippensburg, while picking up 23 rebounds, including 16 defensive boards.
• In indoor track and field competition, Montoursville graduate Lily Saul took home a first-place title for Rhode Island’s women’s team at the 2025 University of Massachusetts Flagship Indoor Invitational in the 1,000 run. Saul ran a time of 2:48.05, edging Northeastern’s Lena Lebrun by 0.65 seconds to win.
The former Warrior also ran the second leg of the 1,600 relay team and had a time in her split of 56.86 as Rhode Island won in 3:52.54.
Saul is currently ranked No. 8 in the nation in the 1,000 meters and her time at the invitational was a personal best.
