Montoursville’s Bobotas, Wentzel enjoying ride together as juniors

DAVE KENNEDY/Sun-Gazette Gage Wentzel of Montoursville controls the action as he wrestles Connor Wetzel of Shikellamy during their match at 172 pounds during the PHAC Championships on Saturday at Milton.

Teli Bobotas and Gage Wentzel met one another when they moved to the Montoursville school district as sixth-grade students. And, ever since then, they’ve been friends and somewhat inseparable.

If one is lifting, the other is not far behind heading to lift as well. If one’s taking an ice bath, the other will soon be doing the same.

They have a similiar mindset, and they love wrestling together for the Warriors.

So it’s only fitting the two got their 100th win milestones within weeks of one another.

Wentzel secured his 100th win at the brutal Powerade Tournament in late December. Bobotas picked up his after he pinned state-ranked Lyle Vermilya of Canton on Jan. 6 in 2 minutes, 53 seconds.

DAVE KENNEDY/Sun-Gazette Montoursville’s Teli Bobotas has his hand raised after winning on Saturday at the PHAC Championships. Bobotas and Gage Wentzel have known each other since sixth grade and have been enjoying the ride together in wrestling ever since.

“Teli and I have been together for as long as I can remember. We actually both moved to Montoursville in the same year in sixth grade and anywhere I go he comes, anywhere he goes, I come with,” Wentzel said. “Whether it’s lifting, an ice bath, wrestling. Whenever I think ‘oh who’s going to be at states?’ I know Teli’s going to be right there with me.”

Both Wentzel and Bobotas are outstanding wrestlers. Bobotas is ranked No. 6 in the state at 121 pounds, the second-highest District 4 ranked wrestler behind Line Mountain standout Brock Rothermel (No. 2). Wentzel is ranked No. 4 at 172 pounds.

“Him and I have the same goals and he’s also making a lot of jumps this year and he’s going to be great this year,” Wentzel said of his friend and teammate.

Like Wentzel, Bobotas was a competitor at the Powerade Tournament and both Wentzel and Bobotas are glad to be competing in tough tournaments knowing it’s only beneficial for when sectionals roll around in a few short weeks.

“I certainly like how we go out to Powerade against all those big Triple A, big Catholic and all those prep schools. Our coach always says come back to reality at home and show everyone what we’re made of and tell them yeah, thats the reason why we go out to those,” Bobotas said. “We’re so dominant and that’s why we perform well at these things because we go out to that bigger competition.”

Wentzel and Bobotas like doing things together, so don’t be surprised if they once again secure trips to the state meet together this season for the third straight year.
