Rumsey earns second straight BEA Invite title, propels Millionaires to fourth

TIM WEIGHT/Special to the Sun-Gazette Williamsport junior Lillian Rumsey wrestles at 118 during the BEA Invite girls wrestling tournament on Saturday at Bald Eagle Area.

WINGATE – While there have been mild alterations to Lillian Rumsey’s offensive approach since her stellar sophomore season with the Millionaires, one aspect of her game certainly hasn’t changed: her assured dominance.

At the 34-BEA Invite on Saturday, the junior once again put together a standout performance, racking up quick pin after quick pin before finishing things off with a seven-takedown, first-period tech fall to earn her second straight title of the event. That showing, coupled with top three finishes from Danica Bacorn and Mykia Petruskevich, helped Williamsport take fourth overall against a stacked, well-rounded list of squads.

“I just thought that I was going to have the right mindset, that I was going to win,” said Rumsey on her outlook heading into the event. “Then, that’s what happened.”

That tournament proficiency became a common occurrence from her very first sanctioned high school event back in December of 2023, thereby becoming an expectation and one she’s constantly proven capable – and confident – in meeting. Through seven regular season tournaments in two seasons, the No. 2 wrestler in the state at 118 has earned seven straight titles.

There isn’t much satisfaction gained there but that’s more because the goal has already been set in stone than anything. Rumsey sees performances like this and her previous title at Mid-Winter Mayhem as steppingstones to prospering come postseason.

“It’s more of these are like shooting me up to get the goal for states this year but it’s definitely not like I’m kind of getting used to it,” said Rumsey. “There’s definitely some girls here that I’ll probably see at districts (too).”

It was also another chance for her to see what her growing batch of teammates could do, with Rumsey highlighting Bacorn’s outing while discussing the team’s overall success.

“I definitely think Danica did really good today,” said Rumsey on Bacorn. “I’ve never seen her wrestle that good and get to that much.”

Following a tough string of losses at Mid-Winter Mayhem and another against Hughesville’s Julia Ritter on Tuesday, Bacorn bounced back swimmingly, posting a first-period tech fall over Trinity’s Cheyene Work to start before attributing two pins on the way to the 100 final. There, she’d fall to No. 5 Alexis Pancoast by first-period pin, but that didn’t necessarily take away from the run.

“I like tough matches. It gives me something to work towards,” said Bacorn. “I definitely learned what I need to work on more, more style I need to do and how I need to work on my technique.”

TIM WEIGHT/Special to the Sun-Gazette Williamsport junior Danica Bacorn awaits a return to action during the BEA Invite girls wrestling tournament on Saturday at Bald Eagle Area.

Her most notable performance came in quarters against Bedford’s Mariah Hershberger. After starting the match off on the wrong foot and going down 6-1 heading into the second period, Bacorn was able to turn the match on its head, working a pin out of top to pull off the abrupt comeback.

“I didn’t let it get in my mind and just really kept up the pace,” said Bacorn. “You just have to have a good mindset for it.”

After falling by major decision in championship semis, Mykia Petruskevich rallied back, posting back-to-back pins to claim bronze and cap her day with four falls. With those three performances, and wins across the board for the Millionaires, the team finished with 98 team points and was able to eclipse 30 teams in the process.

“I think the team did pretty good,” said Bacorn. “They don’t give up. We’re all working on the mindset and the pace we need to be at for the postseason. All this is just for postseason now.”

Outside of Williamsport, all three remaining area teams – Central Mountain, Jersey Shore and Muncy – saw varying degrees of success.

The Wildcats were able to take seventh overall with 74 team points, with that effort being led by consistent standouts in Kendall Wagner, Austynn Falls and Ashlyn Miller. Each built off strong Mid-Winter Mayhem outings, landing in the top three at their respective weights.

Wagner replicated her success at her previous tournament, getting all the way to the finals at 170 before falling to defending state champion Jael Miller by fall. Though Falls was caught off guard in her respective final at 148, the sophomore managed to make it two straight top three finishes after taking third at Mid-Winter Mayhem. And after falling to consolations in quarters at 235, Miller posted three straight sub-minute pins to dominate her way to bronze.

The Bulldogs also saw multiple placements, placing 15th behind top three finishes from senior Addison Dangle and sophomore Isabella Gotschall.

In her championship semifinals match, Dangle quickly shook off a 3-0 deficit against No. 2 seeded Roslyn Snyder (Shikellamy), converting a first-period reversal into a six-point move before pinning her opponent midway through the second.

That win meant a lot to her, having previously lost to Snyder twice this season. Though she’d conclude her run on the receiving end of a second-period fall against state-ranked Makayla Taylor (Clearfield), the Bulldog put together a great performance, finishing with three pins.

TIM WEIGHT/Special to the Sun-Gazette Williamsport's Mykia Petroskevich wrestles at 124 during the BEA invite girls wrestling tournament on Saturday at Bald Eagle Area.

“I was pretty proud of that,” said Dangle on the win over Snyder.

Like Miller, Gotschall saw her championship run end in quarters but was able to bounce back seamlessly. She’d post four straight first-period falls on her way to bronze, capping off the streak by avenging her quarterfinal loss to Brianne Irvin.

For Muncy, Ella Nagel claimed bronze at 112, responding well to a semifinal loss to Bald Eagle Area’s Addison Tice and posting back-to-back falls to close out her run, one which occurred in under a minute. On the day, the sophomore finished with four pins.

All in all, it was a successful day for the area’s girls wrestling teams, which combined for nine top-three placements. It was also another great tournament for the sport overall, one which reflected the continued growth of girls wrestling within the sport of Pennsylvania.
