Hughesville, Montgomery wrestling both fall in first round of state team tournament
Hughesville’s dual-meet season came to an end in the first round of the PIAA Class AA team tournament on the road, as the Spartans fell to perennial standout Bishop McDevitt, 53-13.
Hughesville opened the dual with back-to-back wins as Mason Mordan secured a 4-1 decision victory against Ryan Lengal at 172 pounds and Wyatt Gavitt defeated Landon Blouch for a 15-2 major decision. The two wins put Hughesville ahead 7-0 early.
Lucas Lawler cut the deficit down to 7-6 at 215 when he pinned Luke Stutzman in 3 minutes, 10 seconds. Hughesville increased its lead at 285 thanks to a fall by Colton Woolever in 2:54 for a 13-6 lead, but those would be the final points Hughesville secured as a team.
Bishop McDevitt’s Braiden Lotier pinned Jarret Whitmoyer in 25 seconds at 107 to make it a 13-12 deficit and at 114, Blake Klipp defeated Ethan Wodrig of Hughesville by tech fall, 17-1, 4:00 to give Bishop McDevitt a 17-13 lead.
Aiken Smith of Bishop McDevitt pinned William Travis at 127 in 1:06 and at 133, Zane Crouse defeated Hughesville’s Chase SHaner by decision, 6-1. Wesley Harvey of Hughesville was pinned by Camden Baum in 41 seconds at 139 and Easton Comp of Bishop McDevitt secured a 15-0, 2:36 tech fall win against Kile Hartman at 145. Ryan Lawler won for Bishop McDevitt by tech fall at 152, 16-1, 0:54 and Nicky Negron closed out the dual with a 21-6, 4:13 tech fall at 160 against standout Keagan Smith.
• Montgomery fell in the opening round of the PIAA Class AA team tournament to Berks Catholic, 52-9. Montgomery picked up just one win in contested matches.
At 215, Montgomery’s Evan Hugar outworked Berks Catholic’s Eric Bennethum for a 4-0 decision victory. Montgomery’s only other points came via forfeit at 139 to begin the dual when Brandt Harer won by forfeit.
Max Furman III lost a tough bout at 152 to Berks Catholic’s Coy Koller by decision, 6-4, not being able to secure a few points late to win the dual.
At 172, Raiden Felix lost by decision, 7-1, to Juan Eduardo Franco of Berks Catholic. Standout Manny Stoltzfus battled at 107, but ultimately fell by decision, 4-1, to Berks Catholic’s Trapp Walsh. Montgomery also saw Coy Bryson drop a tough decision at 189 against Carmine Lenzi, 2-0.
At 127, Gaige Reynolds lost to Kieth Messner by tech fall, 16-0, 4:00 and at 133, Berks Catholic’s Brayden Hartranft beat AJ Kroft by tech fall, 21-5, 2:36.
