Local roundup: Three area teams earn league titles in girls basketball

Three area girls basketball teams earned league championships Tuesday night. Jersey Shore routed Midd-West, 57-12 and shares a third straight HAC-I title with Shikellamy, while Lewisburg defeated Central Columbia, 63-59 to win at least a share of the HAC-II crown. Muncy defeated South Williamsport, 51-21 and captured a share of the Mid-Penn West Division championship.
Jersey Shore (15-4, 8-2) also will earn its division’s HAC-I conference tournament berth based on a better overall conference record than Shikellamy. Peyton Dincher scored 22 points and the Bulldogs made quick work of Midd-West, building a 36-8 halftime lead. Sophia Stover added eight points and Gracelyn Frantz for Jersey Shore which closes this week with road games at St. Joseph’s and Troy.
Teagan Osunde produced a double-double, going for 20 points, 15 rebounds, five steals and four assists in Lewisburg’s win, helping the Green Dragons win a share of their first league title since 2018. Lewisburg (17-4, 9-1) also handed Central (17-3, 8-1) its first league loss in three years. Maddy Moyers scored 16 points, pulled down five rebounds and added five assists, while Addy Shedleski had six rebounds and Ava Motto seven points.
Muncy secured no worse than a share of the Mid-Penn West crown, dominating defensively in its win at South. The Indians (15-4, 6-0) will win the title outright with either one win in its final two league games or a St. John Neumann loss in one of its last three league games. It is Muncy’s first league championships in more than two decades and the Indians also have earned a spot in the Mid-Penn Conference title game. Addi Eyer scored a season-high 22 points, dealt seven assists and grabbed five rebounds, while Rosie Zalonis scored 11 points. Ave Eyer produced nine points, nine rebounds and eight steals. Ella Moore scored 12 points for South (10-10, 4-3).
Milton senior Carrie King scored her 1,000th career point in the second quarter of a heartbreaking 46-45 loss against Shamokin. King fnished with 18 points and seven rebounds in a game Shamokin won when Gabby Venna hit a game-winning 3-pointer with five seconds remaining. Liz Shrock had a monster game on the boards for Milton (12-8), collecting 26 rebounds. Addison Wenzel scored 16 points and made five steals, while Amelia Gainer dished five assists.
Loyalsock completed a second straight undefeated HAC-III season, thumping Bloomsburg, 53-9. Alaina Dadzie scored 14 points and Lacey Kriebel 12, along with six steals and four assists. Jaekairah Harden totaled 11 points, six steals and five assists for the Lancers (20-1, 10-0), who host Lewisburg Thursday in a showdown of league champions.
Kallee Johnson matched a career-high and scored 14 points, helping St. John Neumann defeat Bucktail, 45-21. Niyah Tutler added 13 points and Bre Nixon eight for the Knights (10-8). Kendall Wagner scored 11 points for Bucktail and also grabbed her 500th career rebound.
Williamson earned a 38-25 win at home over North Penn-Liberty. Haley Litzelman posted an 11-point, 18-rebound double-double with four steals and Kaylee Graham had 10 points and seven boards.
Kenna Thomas led Williamson with a 10-point performance.
Ella Churchill scored 27 points and nearly outscored Sayre by herself in Cowanesque Valley’s 65-30 rout over the Redskins. In addition to Churchill’s effort, Ashley Woodring scored 17 points for the Indians.
Kendall Kitchen scored 14 points to lift Canton as the Warriors edged Northeast Bradford in an exciting game, 45-41. Northeast Bradford scored 16 fourth-quarter points to attempt to rally, but Canton was ale to do enough defensively to prevent losing late.
Cailyn VanNoy added 12 for Canton and Danah Wesneski scored seven.
NortH penn-Mansfield fell against Athens in a close game, 47-40. Kameron Lightner led Mansfield with 14 points, seven rebounds, three steals and an assist while Claire Dominick scored 12 points and had four rebounds anda. team-high four steals.
Maddie McNamara added six points and five rebounds.
Leiwsburg secured a 54-39 win against Central Columbia to at least tie for a share of the HAC-II championship. Loyalsock will face Loyalsock on Thursday.
Tegan Osunde had a monster double-double with 29 points and a tema-high 15 rebounds while Maddy Moyers added 16. Central Columbia saw Haley Bull and Quinlan Blake both score 24 points apiece.
• Jersey Shore won five bouts by fall in a 60-12 rout over Wellsboro in boys wrestling competition. Jersey Shore’s Mazden Lupton pinned Reed Richardson at 145 pounds and at 152, Tobias Morgret followed it up by pinning Wellsboro’s Wyatt Kilburn.
The Bulldogs’ Jonathan Dincher rode out a 4-0 decision against Silas Mickey at 160 before Zeke Sechrist of Shore defeated Wellsboro’s Evan Ingerick in a high-scoring decision win, 15-10.
Ryder Bowen (189), Slate Sechrist (215) and Owen VanDruff (285) all had falls for Jersey Shore over Marshall Metzger, Jayden Dumm and Hayden Stevens, respectively.
• After helping the Lycoming College men’s swimming team to a 57-49 victory over Moravian University, freshman Sean Martinez received the Landmark Conference Men’s Swimming Athlete of the Week award.
On Saturday, Martinez earned a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:57.69. Martinez also competed in the 200 medley relay (1:59.29) and the 200 free relay (1:46.28), helping the men contribute 22 points to the team score.
Throughout the season, Martinez also placed first in the 200 free in meets against King’s College (2:00.51) and Elizabethtown (1:55.50). He secured a first-place finish in the 400 free against Lebanon Valley (4:42.59), the 500 free against Elizabethtown (5:21.27) and the 800 free in a tri-meet against Susquehanna and Juniata (10:00.42).
Martinez has secured personal-best times in the 1,650 free (19:13.28), the 50 free (23.47) and the 1,000 free (11:32.28) this year.
