Williamsport’s Cohick breaks 100 back record at Williamsport Coaches Invitational

Competing in the 100 back on Saturday morning at the Williamsport Coaches Invitational in swimming, Williamsport’s Kendall Cohick and Jersey Shore’s Reese Charney swam a thrilling race down to the wire. It saw Cohick edge the Bulldog and fellow state qualifier by just 0.15 seconds to win the title in a close race.

And, in the process, Cohick made history once again.

The win by Cohick in 59.36 over Charney’s 59.51 time gave Cohick the Williamsport school record for the 100 back on a day in which two Williamsport school records fell on Saturday. Cohick broke her own record which she set at districts last year.

It was a day of tight competition and exciting races at Williamsport’s Coaches Invitational full of plenty of local swimmers having success.

Cohick’s record wasn’t the only one to be broken on Saturday. Williamsport’s 200 medley relay team broke the Williamsport pool record with a time of 1:37.28. The team consisted of Cooper Allmaras, Evan Summers, Keller Griswold and Brady Ross. That foursome set the school record last Saturday at the Cedar Crest Classic Invitational before setting their own pool’s record this Saturday in 1:37.28.

“The medley relay did an awesome job. They were focused today on breaking the pool record and they did. It was awesome to watch. I can’t wait to see how much more they can drop that time come districts,” Johnson said.

“It was also very exciting to watch Kendall. The last thing I said to her before she went to the blocks was break it and she managed to break her own record that she set during districts last year,” Johnson added. “I was so glad to see her do it while we are still in the regular season. I feel she’s going to break it again by much more come districts.”

Central Mountain had a pair of swimmers who won two events each in senior standouts Camryn Bair and Jonathan Hughes, two swimmers who both qualified last year for the state tournament in Class AAA.

Bair claimed a victory in the 200 IM in 2:11.64, winning by six seconds over Cohick, who took second in 2:17.21. Wellsboro’s Makenna Robbins took fifth in 2:32.38. In the girls 100 breast, Bair swam a time of 1:06.51 to win by beating teammate Gabriella Hosley in 1:12.17. Hughesville’s Ashlynn Barlett was third in 1:14.32 and Williamsport’s Kyla Becker finished fifth in 1:16.59.

Bair’s time in the 200 IM also re-broke her own school record she set earlier this year by three seconds.

Bair ended her day with two relay victories as well. She was part of the Central Mountain 200 medley relay team alongside Abrianna Hosley, Gabriella Hosley and Anna Stahl who won in 1:55.05, winning by less than a second over Jersey Shore’s Kate Butzler, Reese Charney, Aralynn Kimble and Lila Nestlerode (1:56.44). That same Wildcat foursome also won the 200 free relay in 1:45.52.

Central Mountain and Williamsport swam an exciting girls 200 free relay on Saturday. The Wildcats’ team of Camryn Bair, Anna Stahl, Abrianna Hosley and Gabriella Hosley won, just edging out Williamsport’s Kendall Cohick, Naomi Lee, Aviya Halstead and Kiley Persun by 0.06 seconds in the final lap down the stretch.

Cohick, Kyla Becker, Persun and Halstead took fourth in the 200 medley relay in 2:00.21.

In the boys 100 breast, Hughes beat Danville’s Jimmy Zhang by three seconds with a time of 1:01.45. Williamsport’s Evan Weaver took third with a time of 1:09.31 and Lewisburg’s Miles Fassero was fourth in 1:10.01 and Blake Gulden-Luthi was fifth in 1:10.02.

Hughes also won the boys 200 IM in 2:02.99 as he absolutely cruised in the race by winning by 19 seconds as Tunkhannock’s Patrick Williams took second in 2:21.15. Central Mountain’s Rhys Swift was third in 2:22.57 and Warrior Run’s Mason Cohoon finished fourth in 2:22.72.

The boys 200 free relay was just as great to watch for fans.

Tunkhannock’s Josh Gaudet, Jaden Baltrusaitis, Aiden Mislevy, Kyle Kozloski won in 1:29.20, beating Williamsport’s Cooper Allmaras, Brady Ross, Evan Summers and Keller Griswold by 0.05 seconds in an exciting finish.

Griswold swam a solid 50 free in 22.46 and was just 0.16 seconds behind Tunkhanock’s Jaden Baltrusaitis’ 22.30. Ross of Williamsprot finished fourth in 22.69 in a close race.

Griswold was part of Williamsport’s 400 free relay team which swam a 3:20.60 to take first place over Athens by four seconds. Griswold swam with Ross, Allmaras and Summers in the relay.

Lewisburg’s Colin Shannon won the 500 free in 5:06.29, winning by 23 seconds, and also took third in the 200 free in 1:54.76 while Bloomsburg’s Chase Moore won in 1:47.96. In the 500 free, Central Mountain’s Rhys Swift also took third in 5:33.06.
