Local roundup: Williamsport 400 relay team breaks school record from 1987
Williamsport’s 400 relay team record was set in 1987 with a time of 42.42 by Greg Walker, Scott Harmon, Sean Vanmarte rand Gary Brown. This past weekend, that mark finally fell.
Junior Taali Buie, sophomore Alex Takach, junior Nathaniel Woods and sophomore Brayden Ungard broke the record with a time of 41.89.
Not to be outdone, Williamsport’s 1,600 relay team also broke the school record from 2011 with the team of senior Aiden Everett, Takach, freshman Tevin Williams and Ungard with a time of 3:22.17, breaking the record by a second.
The mark was previously held by Devon Fisher, Anthony Emanuel, Jamal Devine and Bryant McCorey.
• Chase Wright slammed a home run and Drake Dupont continued his hot hitting, going 2 for 2 with a triple as Loyalsock routed Sayre, 16-1 in three innings. Loyalsock wasted no time jumping on Sayre, scoring 11 runs in the top of the first.
Wright drove in three runs and Dupont tripled, while scoring three times. He is 7 for 8 over his last two games. Deryk Kulp hit his third double in two games and was one of four players who had both hits and RBIs.
Jimmy Mussina threw four strong innings of relief, striking out seven and Royce Bowes collected two hits, helping Montoursville defeat Midd-West, 10-2. Zack Neill earned the win, entering in the third inning and also had a hit and run for the Warriors (2-0). Montoursville scored eight runs in the third and fourth innings after falling behind 1-0.
Brayden McCourt stole three bases and Michael Reeder was 1 for 1 with three runs. Brody Aldenderfer added a hit, RBI and two runs.
Alex Davis, Liam Shaut and Jason Harer all produced two hits for North Penn-Mansfield and the Tigers forced extra innings with a run in the bottom of the seventh before dropping a 9-6 contest in eight innings in a showdown of undefeated teams. Davis also struck out six in 3 1/3 innings for the Tigers and Shaut and Harer both hit doubles.
Monty Fisher went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Milton fought back from a five-run deficit but lost, 5-4 at Central Columbia. Brayden Gower scattered four hits in six innings and went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, while Chase Lytle was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
St. John Neumann defeated Bucktail, 17-2, in five innings. Neumann scored seven runs in the second inning to pull away. Angelo Birch led the Golden Knights with two doubles. Andrew Walter and Nolan Fagnano each had three hits.
• Jersey Shore’s boys tennis team defeated Shikellamy, 4-1. Ryder Fink earned a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles while Saul Hensler won at No. 2 singles over Cole Lynch, 6-0, 6-2 and Abram Paulhamus won at No.3 singles, 6-1, 6-0 over Griffen Snyder.
In doubles action, Shore’s Ezra Paulhamus and Luke Sarge beat Austin Delgado and Andrew Zelnick, 6-4, 6-1.
Williamsport suffered a 5-0 loss against Selinsgrove. Joseph Hillman fell to the Seals’ Lamond Rodgers at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-6 (7-3). At No. 2 singles, Spencer Kaar of the Millionaires came up shy 6-1, 6-4, against McAlister Defazio.
South Williamsport improved to 4-0 by defeat Muncy in a close contest, 3-2. Muncy claimed two singles wins as Michael Howard (No. 1) and Clynt Oden (No. 2) both secured victories.
South’s No.1 doubles team of Lucas Bower and Dylan Webb beat Alec Noviello and Aiden Murphy, 6-0, 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, David Miller and Levi Jackson of South beat Bryce Eckard and Stephen Fox, 6-2, 6-4.
Montoursville earned a 4-1 win over Central Mountain. Central Mountain’s lone win came at No. 1 singles where Joey McCluskey beat Teli Bobotas, 6-2, 7-5. Montoursville’s Rain Snyder beat Tim Brinker in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 6-0.
Lewisburg improved to 5-0 thanks to a 4-1 win against Danville. The Green Dragons swept the singles compeittion over the Ironmen.
Will Cecchini won against David Sommer at No.1 singles, 6-4, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Alexey Rosenberg had a tough, three-set victory against Nick Petrick, 1-6, 7-6 (7-0), 6-2. Canyon Swartzentruber won at No. 3 singles via medical forfeit.
North Penn-Liberty defeated Cowanesque Valley, 5-0. At No. 1 singles, Ray Nickerson defeated Nate Boyer, 6-2, 6-1. Liberty’s Ayden Deitrick beat Ian Vieira, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.
Liberty’s Talon D’Angelo beat Brandon Swimley, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.
In NTL contests, teams play three doubles contests and whichever school wins two of the three doubles matches earns a point.
• Penn College’s baseball team was swept by Mount Aloysius in a doubleheader, 13-8 and 6-1. Penn College scored all of its runs in the second inning to jump out to an early 8-0 lead in game one. Singles from Brandon Shane, Jaiden Augustine, Dallas Griess, and an error made it 4-0, before Shawn Townsend brought in a pair with a double, and Matt Munoz drove in two more with a single to center.
• The Landmark Conference selected sophomore infielder Sean Perkins for the Landmark Conference Baseball Athlete of the Week after he led the Lycoming College baseball team to four straight conference wins. Perkins hit .417 (6 for 14) with five extra-base hits during the week to lift Warriors into first place in the Landmark Conference.
• Junior Riley Block scored three goals against Elmira and added nine against Elizabethtown to lead the Lycoming College women’s lacrosse team in back-to-back victories, earning her the Landmark Conference Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Athlete of the Week award.
• Montoursville graduate Lily Saul set a personal best in her heat of the 1,500 with 4:22.82 for Rhode Island University. In the 800, she had an outdoor personal best of 2:05.73, which was the school’s second best mark of all-time.
