Williamsport’s Aubrey Phillips-Cobb continues fantastic year at states in two events

DAVE KENNEDY/Sun-Gazette Williamsport’s Aubrey Phillips-Cobb leads the field in the 100 hurdles at the Lock Haven High School Classic this year. At the District 4 championships this past weekend, Phillips-Cobb set two district records in both the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles as she qualified for states in both events.

Aubrey Phillips-Cobb’s sophomore season has been a phenomenal one since the beginning of the spring. She’s gotten better and better, hitting great times each time she steps on the track.

The Millionaire keeps finding her stride when she runs the hurdles and on Saturday at the District 4 track and field championships, Phillips-Cobb went out and dominated.

She won the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.51 — winning by roughly 0.80 seconds — and in the 300 hurdles, ran a time of 44.40 to win by nearly one and a half seconds.

Both times also established district records with her mark in the 300 hurdles tying a 42-year-old record.

Now, Phillips-Cobb will get to run against the states best and continue that fantastic season with one last meet.

DAVE KENNEDY/Sun-Gazette Williamsport’s Aubrey Phillips-Cobb, left, qualified for the state meet in both the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles in Class AAA.

“Same expectation as last year: run hard, try your best, run a good time and also have fun,” Phillips-Cobb said on Saturday with her 300 hurdle gold medal around her neck.

While Phillips-Cobb will no doubt have fun at Shippensburg regardless of the outcome, she does have a great chance of reaching the podium if she keeps running solid times like she did at districts.

In the 100 hurdle prelims, Phillips-Cobb is seeded sixth with her time of 14.51. The only runners in the state at Shippensburg who have better times are Chester junior Damira Allen (14.04), Spring Grove junior Ella Bahn (14.16), Kennett sophomore Aydriane Bowden (14.33), South Fayette junior Delaney Schumaker (14.45) and Dallas sophomore Julia Natitus (14.45).

The Millionaire will run in the second heat of the prelims, which also features Central Mountain freshman Macia Owens.

In the 300 hurdles, Phillips-Cobb is in the fourth heat of the prelims with her district-tying time of 44.40.

That time also has her seeded high at 12th. The top seeds in the field belong to Spring Grove’s Bahn (42.75), Dallas’ Natitus (43.00) and Kennett’s Bowden (43.03).

Having people at districts who were talented pushed Phillips-Cobb to run her times, and having some of the state’s best will no doubt motivate and fuel her to run fast as well.

“Just knowing there’s other people out there trying hard for the exact same things, you just go out there and compete and do your best,” Phillips-Cobb said.

The Millionaire is also glad with how well she’s progressed since the first meet of the season to now.

“I think this year went exactly as planned. Slowly cutting off time, but at the rate that needs to be cut off so I can go into states with confidence,” Phillips-Cobb said.

And no doubt setting two records at the District 4 championships has the Millionaire with a lot of confidence.

“It does, it does,” Phillips-Cobb said with a laugh on Saturday regarding having confidence. “This was actually a PR (in 300 hurdles) and I’m happy I finally made that PR. I can go into states going ‘you ran that (at districts), you can run faster.'”
