HERSHEY — Hughesville’s boys cross country team had a goal to win a state championship this year. And on Saturday afternoon in Hershey, the Spartans did exactly that.

Hughesville edged out Quaker Valley by just six points to win the PIAA Class AA team title in boys cross country at Hershey, the program’s second state championship after winning in 2021.

Hughesville senior Tyce Shaner, fresh off his District 4 Class AA championship gold medal performance, ran an impressive 16:10 to take silver in the race. He was behind only junior Jonah Montagnese of Quaker Valley, who ran a 16:00 to win gold. Both runners were even throughout the majority of the race and were neck-and-neck down the stretch. But Montagnese pulled away late and was able to secure state gold. Shaner ran a pace of 5:13.

Shaner was the Spartans’ only top-10 finisher, but Hughesville saw six of its boys runner finish in the top 50 of the race to help secure the points for gold.
