RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Central Mountain's Hayes Henry gets an arm up after wrestling Emmaus's Logan Roth in the 285 first place match during the Tom Best Memorial Top Hat tournament at Williamsport on Saturday.
WILLIAMSPORT – In the waning moments of Saturday’s 285-pound championship final, the grasp that Central Mountain sophomore Hayes Henry had on his first high school title appeared to loosen. Three minutes removed from taking a 1-0 lead and 30 seconds away from a gold-sealing ride out, his opponent, Emmaus senior Logan Roth, got up and out of Henry’s grip, tying the match and carrying momentum into overtime.
However, as abruptly as Henry lost momentum, he found a way to steal it right back.
In absorbing a double-legged shot from Roth and snapping him down, the Wildcat created the ideal opening to seal the deal, wrapping around his opponent, getting to his back for the match-winning takedown and closing out a strong Top Hat run on a high note. As he secured the 4-1 decision, he held up three fingers in celebration as his coaches and teammates showered him with cheers.
“It’s pretty crazy,” said Henry on the accomplishment. “Last year, I went 1-2 and didn’t place in the bracket. It showed how hard I worked in the summer. That work definitely paid off.”
The win was the cherry on top of a composed overall effort for Henry, a win which headlined a strong showing from the area as a whole.

Of the four area teams in attendance – Central Mountain, Jersey Shore, Loyalsock and Williamsport, all four saw at least one wrestler medal, with the teams combining for 12. Three area wrestlers – Henry, Central Mountain’s Aiden Kunes and Williamsport Jordan Piselli – made championship finals while five posted top three finishes.
Facing Tri Valley’s Donovan Keeth in championship quarters, Henry didn’t miss a beat after surrendering a second-period takedown. He quickly found his way out from under Keeth to narrow the gap to 3-2. Then, the sophomore responded with a takedown of his own, riding Keeth for 30 seconds before turning him on his back for a pin.
He’d carry that momentum into another composed victory in championship semifinals, defeating Mifflinburg’s Landon Moser by 11-5 decision in a match that saw him post a takedown in all three periods and secure his first Top Hat final bid. He’d be joined by one teammate in Kunes, who fought through a tough 145 bracket to get to his third straight.
Though Kunes fell short of defending his 2024 title, his 5-2 loss in the 145-pound championship came at the hands of Connellsville’s Kai Vielma, who went into the tournament ranked No. 1 in the state and is nine months removed from a PIAA bronze.
Kunes – ranked No. 4 in the state – steamrolled his way to championship semis, posting tech falls against Central York’s Alex Engleman and Clearfield Cash Diehl. Match difficulty would increase from there, but the junior kept rolling, carrying his bonus-point streak forward into a top ten semifinal matchup.

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Williamsport's Jordan Piselli wrestles Halifax's Izaya Schickley in the 114 first place match during the Tom Best Memorial Top Hat tournament at Williamsport on Saturday.
Against Saucon Valley’s Mack Santoro, who’s ranked No. 8 in the state in Class AA, the Wildcat would secure a takedown in all three periods, responding well to an opening takedown from Santoro and scoring 11 unanswered points to win by 11-3 major decision. Despite falling in the ensuing match, that didn’t diminish the pride he took from that win, which came against a wrestler seeded one slot ahead of him.
“I came in here seeded third and knocked out the No. 2 seed, 11-3. I wrestled really well that match and stayed focused,” said Kunes on the win.
“In my finals match, I just needed to close the distance a little bit. He’s long; he’s No. 1 in the state. It’s obviously going to be a hard match to win, but I can definitely win those matches if I just critique little things.”
And after finishing his first stint at Top Hat without a medal in 2024, Piselli – ranked No. 9 in the state at 114 – displayed similar progress to Henry in the runback. Heading into his championship matchup, the junior was dominant, adding bonus points to his first three victories of the run, including two pins.
One of those pins came against Saucon Valley’s Gavin Chunko, who’s ranked No. 15 in the state in Class AA. It also came with a first-place final bid on the line and two minutes removed from a second-period deficit.

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Central Mountain's Aiden Kunes wrestles Connellsville's Kal Vieima in the 145 first place match during the Tom Best Memorial Top Hat tournament at Williamsport on Saturday.
Trailing 6-4 past the midway point of the second, Piselli took the lead back with a takedown before briefly turning Chunko on his back for a two-point nearfall. And in the third, one takedown carried into the match-clinching pin, which came just seven seconds before the closing buzzer sounded.
He’d ultimately see his run end with a tough loss to No. 6 Izaya Schickley (Halifax), falling by 8-2 decision, but he was proud of the run as a whole and felt he could learn from the loss.
“It was good. There was strong competition,” said Piselli on the run.
“I certainly expected better in the last match, but I’ll come back and get them later. I think I just put it on a higher pedestal than the rest of my matches when should have been treated like any other match I’ve wrestled.”
Apart from finalists, the area also saw success through consolations on the way to more hardware.

Following quarterfinal losses, Central Mountain’s Patrick Tarantella (133) and Todd Caris (215) would never lose again, winning four matches in a row to garner Top Hat bronze. Tarantella won two bouts in sudden victory, staying composed through a plethora of tense moments, and Caris racked up four pins and ultimately, placed third in his first crack at the event.
Freshman Angelo Tarantella (114), Patrick’s brother, claimed sixth in his first Top Hat appearance, winning three in a row after an opening loss on Friday. Gavin Heverly (121) placed seventh and Collin Bauman (127) and Dalton McDermott (172) finished in eighth, rounding out a day that saw seven Wildcats medal and the team finish in fourth.
“We had a tough quarterfinal round, but all the people that lost came back and wrestled strong,” said Kunes.
Despite enduring two tough losses in a row, Jersey Shore sophomore Louden Spotts closed out his second Top Hat stint on a high note, defeating Conestoga Valley’s Tanner Kane, 2-1, in a tense defensive duel to take fifth at 152.
Williamsport saw two medal apart from Piselli, with senior Jackson Raker (189) placing fifth while never giving up a bonus point and sophomore Gabe Spagnuolo finishing his first crack at the team’s home event in eight at 107. And Loyalsock junior Ivan Baker rounded out the area’s placements, claiming seventh at 145 and closing out his run with an emphatic, first-period pin.

In terms of season debuts, each squad showed what they could do against lofty competition. With three months to go until postseason, there’s plenty of more excitement to come.
