Local roundup: Montgomery’s Bennett reaches 1,000 points in Raiders’ loss

Parker Bennett joined an exclusive Montgomery club Saturday at the Kyle Lynn Tournament, scoring his 1,000th career point in a 52-34 consolation loss against Meadowbrook Christian. Bennett became the 17th player in program history to reach 1,000 points and the first since Logan Almeida in 2022. He also is just the fourth to reach that milestone in the 2000s, joining Steve Hamm and Cameron St. James. Bennett scored a game-high 20 points but Meadowbrook took control in the second half after the game was tied 22-22 at halftime. Bennett was an all-tournament selection, scoring 42 points in two games.
Northeast Bradford edged North Penn-Liberty in a close game, 48-43, at the Montgomery Tournament. Dayton Russell scored 13 and Cooper Brown had 11 for Northeast Bradford. Liberty was led by Luke Kreger’s 21-point performance.
All 12 Montoursville players scored, and the Warriors made quick work of Sayre, building a 36-point halftime lead on their way to taking third at the Mifflinburg Tournament with a 74-17 win. Kingston Fisher scored a game-high 14 points and Cam Cintron a career-high 10. Isaac Erlandson, Adam Sherer and Brennen Imbro all had eight. Montoursville led 20-3 after a quarter and 44-8 at halftime.
Muncy edged MMI Prep at the Sullivan County Tournament, 45-40, holding off MMI Prep’s rally attempt in the fourth quarter. Jaxton Frantz led Muncy with 19 points and Dominic Guardini scored 12 points. The win moved the Indians to 2-1.
Northern Potter defeated Cowanesque Valley, 58-48. A three-point first quarter put Cowanesque in a hole down by 12 that it couldn’t quite claw out of. The Indians were led by Levi Stahli’s 19 points and Josh Teague’s 14.
Nazir Meredith scored 15 points to help Lewisburg defeat North Schuylkill, 51-43. LJ Tucker added 12 points for the Green Dragons and Cooper Mowry scored 11. Meredith and Rebira Jemama each had six rebounds and Cortland Michaels dished out six assists.
A trio of players scored in double figures to propel Sullivan County to a 64-47 win against Troy at home at Sullivan’s Mountain Madness Tournament in the championship game. Lucas King scored 13 points while both Colin King and Tucker Blasi chipped in 12 apiece. Calen Sweigart also scored eight. King had a team-high seven assists while Swiegart had four rebouds, Colin King had four steals, Blasi had four steals and both Ryan Murray and Cayden Smithkors had six rebounds each.
Warrior Run captured its third straight Milton Tournament championship and made it look easy, routing Columbia County Christian, 68-34. The Defenders (2-0) outscored two opponents by 69 points. Aiden McKee collected his second double-double, going for 18 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks. Carter McCormick scored a career-high 15 points and James Keifer dealt 11 assists. Clayton Skokoski added nine points and Ethan Balzer eight.
Gavin Knarr earned all-tournament honors, scoring 12 points and adding three steals as Hughesville routed Northwest, 59-21 and took third at the Shikellamy Tournament. Malachi Flowers excelled off the bench with 10 points and three steals, making all six of his shots from the field and line. Evan Mackenzie and Jonah Heiney each scored nine points and Alex Schultz had eight points, six rebounds and five steals.
• Loyalsock overcame foul trouble and pulled away in the second half, defeating Towanda, 45-28 for its second straight win in 19 hours. Madison Perry and Maddie Wertz (9 points each) combined for 10 fourth quarter points and the defending state champions outscored Towanda, 28-15 in the second half. Alaina Dadzie scored 10 points and Samantha Howell seven off the bench.
Canton had a trio of double-digit scorers help the Warriors secure a close 46-41 win over North Penn-Liberty. Stella Rockwell led Canton with 16 points while both Danah Wesneski and Cailyn VanNoy scored 10. Liberty was led by Haley Litzelman’s 20-point performance.
• The Mansfield University men’s basketball team competed in the first game of conference play against Slippery Rock. The Mounties fell after a tightly contested match, 85-78. Sterling Scoot led with 25 total points, five rebounds and two assists.
JuJu Pagan added 13 points, including a perfect performance at the free-throw line.
Scott established an early rhythm with multiple drives to the rim, while LaQuan Byrd and Diarmid Stewart added key baskets to erase an early deficit.
• The Mansfield University women’s basketball team competed in their first game of conference play against Slippery Rock University, with the Rock taking the win 66-40.
Katie Sheeler led the red and black in scoring with 18 points and two assists. Delilah Nazih collected nine points and one steal.
The Mounties (2-6, 0-1 PSAC) started slow, with Sheeler breaking the scoring with two free throws. The Rock (3-4, 1-0 PSAC) responded 10 unanswered points through the first seven minutes, starting them with a 10-2 lead.
• The Lycoming College women’s swimming team won a pair of races and defeated King’s as the Lycoming swim programs competed in a tri-match against King’s and Penn State-Altoona.
The Lycoming women fell 128-60 to Altoona, but defeated King’s handily, 122-18, for their first win of the season.
The meet was highlighted by junior Gwyn Fox, who outpaced a seven-person field in the 100 free, turning in a winning time of 1:00.17. The 200 medley relay team of freshman Riley Pool, sophomore Madison Robbins (a Wellsboro graduate), senior Anasten Holbrook and Elizabeth Eberz also claimed a win.
Though the race was swam as an exhibition, the Warriors did claim a thrilling victory in the final women’s event of the day, Lycoming came back in the final leg to win the 400 free relay. Robbins and seniors Megan Klansek and Megan Lonergan kept the Warriors within striking distance, then freshman Vanessa Cook turned in an outstanding anchor leg for the victory.
• The Lock Haven men’s indoor track and field team opened the season at the Bison Open. Lock Haven sent 40 men to compete at Bucknell. The Bald Eagles hit two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying marks and one NCAA provisional mark.
Eric Zalar placed fifth in the weight throw with a 17.39m mark, qualifying him for the PSAC Championships on Feb. 28 at Lehigh University. Matt Reinard qualified for the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.41, placing fifth.
Nick Bellomo totaled 4,827 points in the Heptathlon, hitting an NCAA provisional mark and finishing third. Bellomo finished first in the 60 meters (7.12) and first in the pole vault (4.35 meters).
• The Lock Haven women’s indoor track team competed at the Bison Opener at Bucknell University. The meet was Lock Haven’s first indoor meet of the season and its first of two meets at Bucknell this winter.
Samantha Trench (fifth, 9.07) qualified for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday in the prelims for the women’s 60-meter hurdles.
