Warriors put scare into No. 20 Drew in close 75-72 loss
MADISON, N.J. – Sophomore Princeton Layton posted 25 points and eight rebounds and junior Hayden Pardoe, a Central Mountain graduate, added 18 points and seven boards as the Lycoming College men’s basketball team put a scare into 20th-ranked Drew University, which survived, 75-72, on its home floor in Landmark Conference action at Baldwin Gym on Saturday.
The Warriors (3-6 overall, 0-4 Landmark) shot 46% (26 of 57) from the floor against the reigning Landmark Conference champions in Drew (7-1 overall, 3-1 Landmark), who shot 38% (27 of 75), surviving the upset thanks to 19 points on the break.
The Warriors, meanwhile, dominated in the paint, outscoring the Rangers, 44-30, and even outscored the pressing Rangers in points off turnovers, 10-6.
A 9-2 run early in the second half gave Drew a 63-56 lead with 10:45 remaining. The Warriors chipped that down to a point before Drew responded with an 11-2 run to lead 74-64 with 4:10 left. Lycoming rallied, with senior J.J. Beagle, a Willamsport graduate, hitting a layup before Pardoe canned four free throws, whittling the lead to four points with 1:26 left.
The Rangers were stopped on their next possession before Beagle hit another free throw with 42 seconds to make it 74-71. The Warriors got an offensive rebound on the second free throw, but Drew got the ball back after a missed jumper and David Musial hit the front end of his free throws. With 0.3 seconds left, Layton was fouled on a rebound. He hit his first and intentionally missed his second shot, but the Warriors were unable to get a tying shot off.
Lycoming shot 55% (18 of 33) in the first half, paced by 13 points from Layton, as they responded to an 11-0 start by Drew by taking a 29-23 lead off a fastbreak layup from Pardoe with 6:59 left in the half. Drew was able to cut the lead down and tie it at 39 at the break.
