Montoursville native celebrates 100th birthday

Turning 100 years old on Feb. 10, 2020, Juanita Shaw, of Montoursville and resident of Valley View Rehab and Nursing Center, celebrated her milestone surrounded by family.

Considering herself honored to be 100 years old, as not many people get to see that day in their lives, she attributes her long life to “always appreciating people,” she said. She loves meeting new people because “one always makes up for the other.”

She enjoys reading, playing cards, cooking and baking, bowling, and would volunteer with her church and was a volleyball captain. Juanita has enjoyed traveling from as far north as Canada and as south as Florida.

Juanita is the wife of the late Robert M. Shaw and they were married on July 21, 1945, and shared 23 years of marriage before he passed away. She is the mother of Joe Shaw, of New Market, Maryland, and Cathy Marr, of Montoursville. She has four grandchildren, Jason Marr, of Sunnyvale, California, Jimmy Marr, of Wilmington, Delaware, Candice Knight, of New Market, Maryland, and Erica McAdams, of Frederick, Massachusetts; and five great-grandchildren, Mikaela and Grayson Marr, of Wilmington, Delaware, and Colin, Alex and Luke Knight, of New Market, Maryland.

Growing up, she was the oldest of four younger brothers, two of whom are twins. Juanita’s great-grandmother also was a twin as well as her great-great-grandmother. She was active in sports playing baseball, soccer and volleyball. Generationally, her father, brothers and sons have been involved in fire departments.

To commemorate her 100th birthday, family gathered at Valley View Rehab. In attendance at her birthday party was her son, Joe Shaw; daughter-in-law, Shawnee Shaw; brother, Robert “Bob” Compton; daughter, Cathy Marr; and Jim Marr, son-in-law, said a birthday form by Valley View and Rehab staff.
