Newberry man jailed after allegedly strangling ex-girlfriend

As soon as his ex-girlfriend arrived home in Newberry about 4 p.m. on March 13, Lance Allen Sober tackled her on her porch, held her down and applied pressure to her neck with his hands, city police alleged in an affidavit. While Sober was yelling that he was going to kill her, a neighbor came to the woman’s aid and pulled the 45-year-old man off of her while a second neighbor who heard the commotion called 911. When officers arrived, they immediately saw “redness around the woman’s neck and chest. There was one long scratch mark and two small cuts on her face that were bleeding,” it was written in the court document. Sober, of 2706 Grand St., was arraigned before District Judge Christian Frey on charges of felony strangulation, terroristic threats, simple assault, disorderly conduct and harassment. He was initially jailed, but has since been released on $45,000 bail.
