PPL shares electrical safety lessons

Annually, PPL Electric Utilities provides electrical safety lessons to adults and children, across 29-counties. PPL teaches children about electrical safety with an interesting twist: They send actors into schools to teach engaging, entertaining and creative educational theater performances.

This year, PPL offered a new show called “Agents of Safety” which offers lessons on how electricity is made, used, identifying dangerous situations and staying safe around electricity with tips and advice such as:

Inspect electrical cords and extension cords: Check them regularly and replace them if they develop cracks or wear in the insulation. Use them in places where people won’t step on them or drive over them. And don’t string more than one extension cord together.

Don’t overload electrical circuits: Overloaded circuits can cause fires. Some signs that circuits are overloaded include flickering or dimming lights; frequent blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers; warm wall plates; or crackling, sizzling, buzzing or a burning odor coming from outlets or switches. Don’t ignore these warning signs.

Be safe around power lines: Never climb trees or fly kites near power lines and if you have Mylar balloons at parties, remember to tie them securely to a heavy weight and don’t allow them to go into the air.

Report downed power lines: PPL invests to keep our system strong making it unlikely to see a downed electrical line, unless there’s an ice storm or someone drives into a pole, said a news release. If you see one, report it at 1-800-DIAL-PPL (342-5775). Stay well clear of it and keep kids and pets away as well.

It is safe to always assume a fallen line is still carrying power.

Call 811 before digging: Dial 811 before digging into the ground with power equipment. The call is free. By making the call, you ensure that a survey is done in the dig area for underground power lines and other utilities.
