Otzinachson group, society plan hikes

The Otzinachson Regional Group of the Sierra Club and the Edward Abbey Hiking Society's public hikes are winding down for the year. Each trip is open to the public, but hikers should contact the hike leader prior to the event. Participants are advised to bring lunch and water on every hike. Snacks are optional.

Hikes will be held:

• Saturday: Standing Stone Trail and Thousand Steps in Huntingdon and Mifflin counties. This 8-mile strenuous hike follows the trail from Route 655 to the bottom of the Thousand Steps. There is a steep climb to get near the top of the ridge and more climbing to reach the top, but there are several spectacular views along the way and points of historical interest near the steps.  There are no water sources along the trail so bring sufficient water, along with snacks. Some may want to use hiking poles. Meet where Standing Stone Trail crosses Route 655 near Fousetown at 11 a.m. Leader Kristin Joivell may be reached at kristinjean@hotmail.com, 814-386-6267.

• Dec. 18: R.B. Winter State Park and Bald Eagle State Forest in Union County. Hike a variety of trails to make a 10-mile loop. Meet at the parking lot at the breast of the dam along Route 192 at 8:30 a.m.  Leader Joe Rebar may be reached at 570-259-0134.
