Sex-offending bank robber sentenced

He’s a convicted bank robber and statutory sex offender who allegedly picked up another minor girl while running from the law.

Now Donald Steven Guthrie, 38, of Jersey Shore, is headed to state prison for 16 1/2 to 32 years.

That’s the sentence county Judge Dudley N. Anderson handed down to Guthrie for having sex with a 14-year-old girl in an Avis garage on Aug. 1, 2012, and robbing the Hughesville First National Bank on Aug. 27, 2012.

Guthrie, who has a 10th grade education, also was convicted of sending sexually explicit text messages to a 15-year-old girl in 2008, 2009 and 2011.

On top of that, Guthrie faces additional sexual misconduct and kidnapping charges in Jefferson County. After robbing the Hughesville bank last year, Guthrie fled the area and was nabbed outside of Illinois, allegedly with another 14-year-old girl, a runaway from Punxsutawney.

“My client was befriended by a minor in Jefferson County and had a relationship with her that exceeded the permissible range allowable by law,” Assistant Public Defender Robert Cronin said.

In February, Guthrie’s case was assessed by Rhonda McDonald, an investigator with the Sexual Offenders Assessment Board, who determined Guthrie to be a sexually violent predator. The determination was made after weighing clinical factors that included Guthrie’s behavioral characteristics and the age and number of his victims.

“The person on the assessment board, I never seen or met that person,” Guthrie said, frustrated with the determination.

Despite protests, Guthrie conceded his sexually violent predator status as part of the plea agreement. He’ll have to register as a Megan’s law offender for the rest of his life.

“I understand it’s a serious offense and requires serious time but I don’t want to spend so much time there that I, you know, become the prison,” Guthrie told the judge.

Guthrie pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of robbery, one count of indecent assault, one count of unlawful contact with a minor and one count of statuatory sexual assault. Guthrie must submit a DNA sample and pay $1,823 restitution to First National Bank. He will receive 347 days credit for time served.

“The sentence is in the aggravated range due to the negotiated plea bargain where a considerable number of charges were dismissed and the Commonwealth waived mandatory sentences,” the judge said.

Starting at $2.99/week.
