Opioids a gateway to heroin, summit scheduled

By Mark Maroney 2 min read

As opioids continue to be a gateway to dangerous and deadly use of heroin, the city needs to close that gate, according to members of the Christian Care Community on Substance Abuse and the Williamsport/Lycoming Crime Commission.

The organizations met Thursday to announce a four-hour summit they will organize this weekend on the epidemic in the city and nation.

The summit, which will feature several speakers including medical professionals, will be from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Michael Ross Room in the Trade and Transit Centre II at West Third and Laurel streets. It is open to the public.

Mayor Gabriel J. Campana held a news conference Thursday in his office and suggested that, if he could by law, he would issue a state of emergency for the city regarding the use of narcotics and the effects it has on crime and lives of residents.

The panel is expected to share possible solutions to the complex problems the city and other communities throughout the county face, according to Ronald James, executive director of the commission.

The event will include the medical community and experts in their fields sharing the latest efforts to curb the use of opioids, which often leads to heroin use and addiction.
