Locally elected and appointed officials voted on the following matters in the past week:
County
• The Lycoming County commissioners approved the payment of up to $439,000 of debt owed by the White Deer Golf Complex in order to save money on the annual $24,000 owed in interest and other fees. The commissioners are seeking funds that can pay down the debt without using taxpayer money.
They expect to be able to use impact fee legacy funds for "at least some" of the payment. They said revenue from the golf complex will go toward reimbursing the funds used on the debt. Voting were Jack McKernan, Tony Mussare and Rick Mirabito.
Municipal
• Jersey Shore Borough Council voted 7-0 for Lycoming County to collect its taxes for the next three years. Voting yes were Marguerite Dyroff, Sean Simcox, Janet Barnhart, Mike Zellers, Paul Garrett, Barb Schmouder, and Matthew Haag. Ken Scheesley was absent.
• South Williamsport Borough Council voted 5-3 to OK an easement request for a contractor who built a recent home on Eighth Avenue. The contractor requested they be able to connect to the line through the borough's right-of-way rather than dig up the street. Voting yes were Joseph LaRue Jr., John Decker, Carl Nolan, J. Bernard Schelb and David Geise. Voting no were Corey Lehman, Cupp and March. Robert Cronin was absent because of a military deployment.
• The Loyalsock Township supervisors voted 5-0 to enter into an agreement with the city in coming up with a plan to comply with the Chesapeake Bay Pollution Reduction Plan. The plans should be done by the summer and then the township and city each have five years to complete the suggested projects. Voting were Paul D. Nyman, Virginia M. Eaton, John C. Bower Jr., Marc C. Sortman and Richard H. Wheeland.
School District
• The Jersey Shore Area School Board voted 5-4 in favor of setting school-closing public hearing dates for Avis and Salladasburg elementary schools on Jan. 25 and 26. The hearings will take place at the Jersey Shore Area Middle School, 601 Thompson St. Voting yes were members Craig Allen, Karen Stover, Michelle Stemler, Harry Brungard and John Pecchia. Voting no were members Christopher Fravel, Merrill Sweitzer, Mary Thomas and Kelley Wasson.
• The South Williamsport Area School Board unanimously appointed Susan Bowman to the last remaining vacancy on the board for Region One, which encompasses the borough's 1st Ward and the 1st precinct in the borough's 2nd Ward to the east side of Curtin Street. The seat opened up when former board member Nicholas Fiorini resigned at the end of last year due to relocating outside of the region. The board also unanimously voted to opt out of applying for exceptions from the state come budget time, meaning it must remain within the Act 1 index designating the percentage by which a school district can raise taxes.
• Montoursville Area School Board voted 7-1 to appoint Dave Shimmel as a school director. Voting yes were Scott Konkle, Jennifer Marriott, William Ruffing, Susan Beery, Daniel Albert, Robert Logue, and Dottie Mathers. Ron Snell voted no.
• The Loyalsock Township School Board unanimously approved to keep the district's property tax increases for the 2018-19 school year within the state published maximum at a meeting Wednesday night. Voting yes were Edward H. Ade Jr., Charles W. Edmonds, David P. Hornberger, Christina L. Kiessling, Robert D. Leidhecker, John B. Raymond, Paul R. Watson II, Melvin E. Wentzel and Paul R. Young II.
• The East Lycoming School Board adopted a resolution Tuesday night to opt our of applying for exceptions and to remain within its Act 1 index -- limiting property tax increases for 2018-19 to the state published amount. The board also approved the appointment of Kristy Creasy as a board member until December, 2019, and will be filling the vacancy for Hughesville Borough's 1st Ward and 2nd Ward. Voting yes were Richard Michael, Richard Bradley, Donna Gavitt, Michael Mamrak, Karen Berger, Lisa McClintock and Robert Heckrote. Kristy Creasy and Erica Hubler were absent.
