The Lycoming County United Way’s annual meeting on April 10 will honor the 2018 recipients of the Douglas C. Dickey Humanitarian Award, the organization’s highest volunteer award, Dr. John and Margaret Piper.

The reception starts at 5 p.m. with dinner starting at 5:45 p.m., and the event takes place at the Holiday Inn, 100 Pine St.

The event will be a celebration of the successful 2017 campaign.

“So in addition to electing officers, it’s a celebration of the work that was done in the campaign. That’s really the purpose of it,” said Ronald A. Frick, president of the Lycoming County United Way. “I’m excited as it’s my first one as president. There’s a lot to celebrate this year.”

The Douglas C. Dickey Humanitarian Award is “presented annually to individuals whose dedication, commitment and outstanding leadership have made a major contribution to the welfare of Lycoming County,” according to a United Way press release.

The award was renamed in 1997 to honor the memory of the late Douglas C. Dickey, a Lycoming County United Way president, who was among those lost in the TWA Flight 800 crash, the press release said.

“There’s a committee that decides the award, and its a committee made up of past recipients. We take a list of qualifications for folks involved in the community, folks involved in United Way … John and Margaret have a long history for serving in the community, and more specifically, for serving in the United Way,” Frick said.

The Pipers are most known as being the 2016-17 United Way Campaign leaders, which raised over $1.2 million in Lycoming, Sullivan and Tioga counties, according the press release.

They have both been involved with United Way since the 1970s, and Margaret Piper has been a committee chair with John Piper serving in the campaign cabinet, both for several years.

Frick said other awards will also be distributed during the annual meeting, including the Douglas J. Shangraw Memorial Volunteer Award.

“That’s always a surprise. We’ll announce the winner of that award that evening, and that’ll be celebrated,” he said.

Tickets are available for $25 by calling 570-323-9448 or emailing khansen@lcuw.org.

Frick said it will be an opportunity to celebrate the campaign’s success and acknowledge the efforts of those who help both the community and the United Way thrive.
