A proposal by the emergency personnel in the city to limit the amount of time fireworks can be shot off needs more work, city officials said.
City Police Capt. Jody Miller said prior to Council's public safety committee the intention is to get input from the fire department and others in the public before drafting an amendment to the city noise ordinance related to fireworks.
An attempt is being made by the police and others to address numerous complaints about more powerful aerial and louder fireworks available since a change in the state law last October.
Miller said he had drafted an amendment to include hours such as 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. from June 27 to July 6, but said there may be other amendments included that cover New Year's Eve.
Mayor Gabriel J. Campana, who oversees the police department, said while he can appreciate the celebrations of the nation's independence the noises are unacceptable for residents who must get up in the morning, who have pets and who have children.
Any amendment must be approved by the full body of council, Miller said.
"We have some more work to do on it," he said.
