Grafius Run survey to begin today, will probe flood damage

City residents living near Grafius Run may soon hear a knock on their door or find a survey left near it.

City officials and a city consulting firm have begun to ask residents for a damage assessment of flooding caused directly by Grafius Run.

The first house to be surveyed is in the 500 block of Hawthorne Avenue which will be visited today, said Jason Fitzgerald, president of Penn Strategies, the city’s consulting firm.

The surveyors will begin to canvass homes in earnest starting Monday, said Adam Winder, general manager of the city streets and parks department.

Either Chelsea Myers, city planner, or Mark Benner, city engineer, plan to distribute the surveys between the hours of 5 and 7 p.m.

One Monday, the plan is to go door-to-door at 5 p.m., followed by 6 p.m. Tuesday and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Winder said.

They will continue to distribute the surveys and visit homes until the area is covered, he said.

Anyone who does not receive a survey may contact the streets and parks department to ensure they make a visit, Winder said.

The survey area may extend further than near Grafius Run, as the floods have impacted a large area not necessarily close to the run, Winder said.

The plan is to turn the survey information over to the state Department of Environmental Protection to produce a damage assessment report. Officials there then may help the city deal with its ongoing flooding of the run, Fitzgerald said.

The cost of the overtime and cleanup efforts by city public works employees will be included in the report, he said.

Such information is vital so that state lawmakers may be able to contribute by putting a request into the state capital project budget, he said.

The survey won’t ask for anything other than a name and address and damage or loss estimates, he said.

Starting at $2.99/week.
