Tree replanting available through recent state grant

Eighty trees will be ordered and planted across city sites in April adding to Williamsport’s urban forest.

The trees are possible through an $8,281 grant from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, said Adam Winder, general manager of the city streets and parks department.

Winder announced the grant Thursday to City Council.

Forty of the trees will be planted along Little League Boulevard. Other trees will go on Mulberry Street, from Brandon Place to Washington Boulevard; First Avenue, from High Street to Rural Avenue and Second Avenue, from High Street to Rural Avenue.

Most of the ash tree varieties have succummed to a pestilence, Winder said.

Councilwoman Liz Miele was credited as instrumental in pushing the city to look into the state Urban Forestry Council and department ideas to reforest city landscapes, Councilwoman Bonnie Katz said.

The existing trees on private property, public places and canopy of new trees planted in the spring are an asset the city has going for it, according to Council President Jonathan Williamson.

As for the past holiday, Christmas trees continue to be picked up by the streets department, Winder said. The collection of holiday trees will go on for another month or until there are no more along the curbside, he said.

Starting at $3.90/week.
