The state's vacancy in the 12th Congressional seat has set off a scramble of candidates interested in being nominated by their parties to the seat.
While the Democrats have settled their process for filling that seat, Republicans have yet to decide how they will decide to nominate someone.
The issue will be settled early next month, said Lycoming County Republican Chairman Joseph Hamm.
"Coming out of that convention, we will definitely have a nominee," he said.
So far, a number of Republicans have filed to run for the nomination. They are state Republican House members Jeff Wheeland and Fred Keller, Robert Noerr, Stacy Garrity, Joe Moralez, and Chris Hoffman.
The convention for selecting a Republican nominee is set for March 2 at 9 a.m. at Farrington Place, Williamsport.
Democrat Marc Friedenberg came forward as the only candidate from his party, according to Lycoming County Democratic Chairman Bob Hertzenberg.
If more than one candidate had come forward, county committees from the district would have taken part in an online convention with the candidate receiving a majority of the votes cast receiving the nomination. Eligible voters were to be elected members of county committees with two from each municipality.
Republican Tom Marino resigned the House seat in January. He was first elected to Congress in November 2010.
Gov. Tom Wolf subsequently announced that a special election to fill the vacancy will take place on Tuesday, May 21, with the nominees from each party squaring off -- the day of the state's primary election.
The date precludes a primary with the winner serving out the remainder of Marino's term, which ends in January 2021.
