Authors feature volume of historical women

Co-authors Mary Sieminski and Janet Hurlbert will be on hand at the Thomas T. Taber Museum of the Lycoming County Historical Society to autograph special issues of “West Branch Life” magazine featuring the second volume of “Women of Distinction.”

The event runs from 2 to 4 p.m. April 7 at the museum, 858 West Fourth St..

Sieminski will make brief remarks about the edition, which features reprints of monthly articles that have appeared in the Williamsport Sun-Gazette. Volume 2 also contains articles by contributing writers Andrea Campbell, Dr. Judith Gouldin and Greg Renn. A limited number of copies of Volume 1, which also was published by the local newspaper, will be available for purchase at the event.

Sieminski has had a life-long interest in women’s studies and draws from the rich history of Lycoming County for her women’s stories. She is the project manager for the Lycoming County Women’s History Collection, the digital archive of resources relating to local women’s history.

A retired librarian, Sieminski has served in libraries in New England and as director of the Pennsylvania College of Technology library. After retiring from Penn College, Sieminski was involved in consulting and had worked short- term positions at several libraries, including Lycoming College and Bucknell University.

She is a graduate of the Williamsport Area High School and Bucknell and has studied at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Sieminski earned a Master of Arts degree in American Literature from Boston University and a Master’s degree in Library Science from Simmons College.

Hurlbert is Professor Emeritus of Library Services at Lycoming College, having retired in 2013. She also has held professional positions in libraries at Iowa State University and Virginia Commonwealth University, and has earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Denver. She currently is continuing her interest in the Lycoming College archives by working on special projects.

She played a role in mounting the Lycoming County Women’s History Project and securing and directing its progress. Hurlbert is currently a project advisor to this collection.
