Coroner: Woman dies in Pennsdale plant accident

PENNSDALE — A female employee of Economy Locker Storage Co. was killed late Monday morning in an industrial accident at the plant’s facility at 324 Worthington Lane, according to Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr.

“This was a horrible accident,” he said.

The employee, believed to be in her 30s, either fell in or was pulled into a very large commercial meat grinder she was operating about 11:40 a.m., Kiessling said.

The woman, whose identity was not released Monday night, had been standing on a set of stairs that was on wheels, Kiessling said,

Since no one witnessed the accident “we don’t know if she fell in or was pulled in as she was perhaps reaching for something in the grinder, which was about 6 feet off the ground,” Kiessling said.

Another employee heard a noise and called for help after finding the woman in the grinder, Kiessling said.

Muncy Township and Muncy Area volunteer firefighters responded to the scene. The employee was already dead when they arrived, officials said.

Firefighters worked for about 45 minutes disassembling the machine in order to recover the woman’s body.

Investigators from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were on the scene following the accident and were leading the investigation into the woman’s death.
