A 29-year-old man from Nanticoke allegedly car-jacked two people and took police on a chase that ended after he crashed downtown Monday afternoon.

Michael Coombs stopped a motorist at around 1:15 p.m. along Route 15 in Kelly Township, police said. He allegedly walked up to the window and demanded the woman leave the vehicle, telling her he had a gun.

Police said Coombs was seen again at around 3:30 p.m. when he walked up to a second parked car on Route 405 in Delaware Township.

After a short struggle, Coombs forced the victim from the car and drove off in it, police said. Watsontown police found Coombs on Route 15 entering South Williamsport and he sped off southbound.

Coombs took police over the Market Street bridge, causing multiple crashes between there and Pine Street in downtown Williamsport.

Tammy Mitchell, a witness, saw the car Coombs was driving drift into the tree on Pine Street.

"I saw the car drift into the tree and the guy got out all dazed," Mitchell said. "I jumped out of my truck and tried to stop him, cause I thought it was just an accident. He ran around me and between my car and another car."

The other car belonged to Amy Gray who was also sitting on Pine Street in her parked car.

"I saw him hit the tree and get out and run," Gray said. "I was shocked. I couldn't believe it. I just thought he was stunned from hitting the tree, but when he kept running, he didn't want help, he just wanted to get away."

Coombs was taken into custody and arraigned in Milton. He is being held in Union County Prison in lieu of $150,000.
