Hoops at Memorial Park a good thing; Execution shaky

The concrete is curing.

The basketball hoops are coming back to Memorial Park.

We are glad for that. We never thought they should have been removed five years ago over drug-related activities.

The city needs all the positive recreation activity locations it can get for its youth.

We don’t condone the activities that were going on there are the maintenance headaches associated with the courts, but unfortunately both those things come with outdoor places of gathering. Such things can and should be policed as much as possible, but it’s unrealistic to think they can be entirely prevented.

We are less certain about locating the basketball courts next to pickleball courts, which were installed five years ago when the basketball courts were removed. They have not been particularly popular.

We also are concerned that Mayor Gabriel J. Campana’s well-intentioned plan to have an advisory group monitor the courts will create unwelcome headaches.

Are these people going to have police reporting powers? If so, they will need clearance before performing those duties, with FBI checks and fingerprint registration.

In our view, the city should offer the courts and monitor activities there or respond to public calls there with official people just like it would any other outdoor recreation area in the city.

We are glad the courts are back for the kids, but it would have been great if Mayor Campana had consulted, as asked, with the Williamsport Recreation Commission first.

Starting at $2.99/week.
