Williamsport boys track just short of HAC-I title

SELINSGROVE – Williamsport’s Thomas Ross didn’t want his senior season to be defined by the height 6 feet. The Millionaires’ high jumper had been stuck on that number all season and with only three more weekends remaining in the track and field season, time was quickly running out for him to put the frustrating mark behind him.

He did more than that on Tuesday afternoon at Selinsgrove High School.

Ross cleared 6-3 for the first time in his career and with Saturday’s league championships back at Selinsgrove, Ross thinks he can jump higher before he enters the district meet where he will need to win or jump 6-5 to qualify for the PIAA Championships.

“It’s been so frustrating and I’ve tried everything I could and I could never get over six feet so getting over six feet and to 6-3 is a confidence boost,” Ross said. “Coming up three inches is pretty good in one meet and it’s a good way to go into the league meet and districts.”

The individual milestone by Ross couldn’t help the Millionaires defeat Selinsgrove, however, as the Seals won the battle of HAC-I unbeatens, 84-66, to clinch the conference championship.

The Williamsport girls nearly derailed Selinsgrove’s perfect season and HAC-I title hopes, but fell a little short, losing 80-70.

The regular season will be quickly forgotten and Ross should enter the postseason with a new outlook. Knee tendinitis has slowed his progression, but taking a few days off with visits to the trainer has helped him look like the high jumper coach Sam Belle expected to see at the beginning of the season.

“He has been frustrated at not getting above that six feet so this is a big boost for his confidence,” Belle said. “He was at that plateau at six feet and today he got off of it and he got off it well.

“At the beginning of the year ,we had hoped he’d get six-five but he stalled out. Maybe he is moving on now. I hope.”

The Millionaires were hoping for a league title, but minus Devin Miller they lost valuable points in the sprints that they weren’t able to overcome. The Seals outscored Williamsport, 19-4 in the 100, 200 and 400-meter relay.

“I think we lost some points in the sprinting events, not having Devin in there hurt,” Belle said. “I would have expected him to make points in the long jump, too, and maybe make a difference in that four by one.”

The Seals (7-0, 6-0) swept the long jump.

Williamsport (6-1, 5-1) won the other two relays, but by the time the 1,600-meter relay took to the track, Williamsport’s deficit was already too big to overcome.

Many expected Tuesday’s boys meet to be as close as the discus was between Selinsgrove’s Billy Park and Mike Walter and Williamsport’s Garrett Nork. The three throwers were separated by three inches. Park won with a heave of 130-6 and was followed by Nork 130-5 and Walter 130-4.

The Selinsgrove girls had their HAC-I championship clinched by the time the 1,600 relay went off, but the Millionaires still had an opportunity to end the Seals’ perfect season. Williamsport trailed by five points with five on the line during the relay, but Jaid Harsch couldn’t quite close a sizable deficit she faced after the anchor took the baton. Harsch cut into the lead, but over the final 100 meters she didn’t have enough left in her legs after running the two hurdles races and high jumping earlier.

Still, the Millionaires gave the Seals (7-0, 6-0) their biggest scare of the season. Earlier in the season, Selinsgrove beat second-place Shikellamy, 86-64.

“They did awesome today,” Williamsport coach Vicki Eberhart said. “There is not any more that I could have asked from them. We had a lot of talks abut that and I said all I want is all your heart and determination and that I didn’t want them to leave with their heads down. I wanted them to do their best and my girls did.”

The Millionaires (4-3, 4-2) were strong in the mid to long distance races. Williamsport secured 23 of a possible 27 points in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200. Hannah Weber, who also ran a leg in the 400-meter relay, continued to make gains and won the 800 and 1,600. The sophomore set a personal best for the second consecutive meet, running the 1,600 in 5:35.97.

Harsch won the 100 hurdles and high jump, and was just edged at the line by Kayla Swartz in the 300 hurdles after leading much of the race.

She’ll get a chance to reverse that outcome on Saturday at the PHAC Track and Field Championships back at Selinsgrove.

“I think it will help (returning to Selinsgrove for the league meet),” said Eberhart, whose team also ran in the Selinsgrove Classic earlier in the year. “We’ll be really familiar with it and we always seem to perform well here.”
