Defenders dominate Dragons in wrestling

By Cheryl R. Clarke 5 min read

LEWISBURG – Jeff Burkhart was in trouble.

The Warrior Run heavyweight was being sent to his back by Lewisburg's Lance Klinefelter. Except when the first-year wrestler got to his back, he kept right on rolling through and instead put Klinefelter on his back.

Burkhart needed just 31 seconds to record his biggest win of the season. And that win knocked any semblance of life out of Lewisburg as 19th-ranked Warrior Run closed out a 60-15 win over the Green Dragons on Saturday night.

Warrior Run added a little cushion to its chase for a spot in the District 4 Duals with the win, improving to 5-3. The Defenders have three duals left this week against Mifflinburg, Bloomsburg and Milton before the cutoff date to be at .500 or better Saturday.

"Honestly, we've been taking a little bit of a breather since the Southern match," Warrior Run head coach Jeremy Betz said. "I knew it wasn't going to get much deeper in the water than that match. But as far as qualifying for district duals, that has been our focus. These guys are talking about qualifying for (state duals), but we can't do that if we don't qualify for district duals. We still have to be workmanlike in this position."

Saturday's win over Lewisburg could be described very much as workmanlike. There were no frills about the way the Defenders wrestled. They got on the mat, did what was necessary, and 11 times walked off the mat after having their hand raised.

Warrior Run recorded eight pins and also had a forfeit win for Noah Hunt as it led from start to finish. But no falls were as important as Burkhart's at 285 pounds and Wyatt Fisher's at 220. Lewisburg had chipped in to Warrior Run's lead with back-to-back wins from Andrew Shedleski and Dakotah Snyder.

The wheels began spinning on the Lewisburg bench about how the Green Dragons (8-10) could get back into the match. Fisher, though, killed those thoughts with a first-period fall at 220. Then Burkhart all but put the final nail in the coffin with his athletic feat at 285.

"We knew what Roman (Aksenov) was going to be against. (Fisher) is seasoned," Lewisburg head coach Jim Snyder said. "But we never saw that coming at heavyweight. Lance has got to recognize that. He's been around too long to allow that to happen. That's point blank. He can't allow that to happen."

Burkhart's first season wrestling has had its trials and tribulations. His win last night pulled his record to an even 8-8. It also snapped a three-match losing streak to the blue chip heavyweights in the district in Montoursville's Dalton Tubbs, Southern Columbia's Connor Fulmer and Central Columbia's Kile Kauwell.

But last night's win showed just what Burkhart is capable of. His roll-through on Klinefelter's takedown attempt was pure athleticism. His ability to stay on top and finish off the fall was perfect capitalization of an opportunity. And it was a six points which sent the Warrior Run faithful in the stands and the Defenders on the bench into a frenzy.

"What I like about Jeff's match is he went out initiating movements," Betz said. "I think it was less about countering. The more we initiated the sequence, the more we were able to finish the sequence."

Warrior Run had already taken a 36-6 lead by the time Lewisburg tried to creep back into the match. Shedleski ran an arm bar in the third period to hold off Christian Wachter, 6-2, in a fantastically entertaining bout. And Snyder needed just 1:07 to pick up the fall at 195 to cut the Green Dragons' deficit to 36-15 with four bouts to go.

But the hole Lewisburg had dug itself was already too deep. They only other win it got was Austin Ruhl's first-period fall at 1138 pounds. Warrior Run won seven of the first eight bouts, and five of those produced six points. And all five of those falls came in the first period.

"We competed tonight and we had some opportunities to win," Jim Snyder said. "But it's the same old story for us. We're getting pinned too much. You have no shot to win when that happens."

Now Lewisburg is on the brink of elimination from District 4 Duals contention. With their 8-10 record, the Green Dragons have just three duals left before the cutoff date and must win all three in a single day Saturday to qualify for the duals. They'll face Mount Carmel, Central Columbia and Hughesville in a quad-meet Saturday.

"We've got nothing to lose now," Snyder said. "Nobody thinks we're going to make it at this point. So let it go. Go down on Saturday and let's have fun."
