The seven-year Division I assistant replaces Guy Rancourt, who spent the last 10 years at Lycoming, going 176-89 with two MAC Commonwealth titles and three NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. Rancourt stepped down earlier this month to take the head coaching job at his alma mater, Western Connecticut State University.
Lycoming will make the announcement official today.
"I think Lycoming being one of the premier liberal arts colleges was first and foremost and the teams athletic success to compete for MAC Championships year in and year out, and not just basketball. Lycoming has very strong athletic teams across the board," McGarvey said. "After living around Ursinus and Colgate, the campus community and a residential campus is a place where I want to be with my wife and daughter."
McGarvey spent the prior seven years at Colgate and in his time with the Raiders, he helped mentor nine All-League honorees, a Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year and a Patriot League Rookie of the Year. Last season, he helped the squad to a program-record 19 wins, a Patriot League Championship game appearance and Colgate's first national postseason tournament appearance since 1996.
"It's always challenging leaving people that you're close with, people that you love working with and kids that you love coaching, but the opportunity to be a head coach and lead a program that has tons of athletic tradition was something that I couldn't pass up and I'm thrilled to have the opportunity and I'm really thankful for President Trachte and Director of Athletics Mike Clark for giving me the opportunity," McGarvey said.
Prior to Colgate, the Lower Gwynedd native spent five seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Ursinus, where in his playing career he was a consensus two-time All-American and two-time Centennial Conference Player of the Year.
Inducted into the Ursinus College Hall of Fame in 2016, McGarvey finished fourth on the school's-all-time scoring list and is sixth in Division III history with 754 career assists. He still holds the Centennial Conference records for career assists and steals.
"I'm really thrilled to get started. I can't wait to hit the ground running and get to know our current roster and returners and get to know those players at a little bit of a deeper level and then hit the road looking for the next batch of Lycoming Warriors," McGarvey said. "It's right around the corner with recruiting season coming up in July and I'm excited to get going."
